i just had a new rear tyre put on my Z1r and they've managed to shear off the stud which holds the rim lock in place . They've put it all back together with out it so the rear wheel only has one which pissed me off slightly. plus the inner tube can be seen squeezing up through the hole in the rim .

It looks/feels like they've balanced it OK and they didnt charge me.

Do the Z1r mag wheels realy need these rim locks as they are normally used on moto crossers? Can i use the bike with out the rear tyre comming off ? Confused

The rim-locks aren't really necessary, but I'd sort out the tube squeezing out of the hole Shocked

When I had mine rebuilt by Central Wheels they told me they are not really necessary these days. I did have new chrome rims though which may be why.

Agree that the tube poking through the hole in the rim sounds like a potential hazard Shocked

Just put a dome head bolt through and nylock nut on it . Ductape over bolt head and get wheel balanced . The fukwit that fitted the tyre like that needs slapped .

I read in this months CMM that there were issues with the weight of crossply tyres back in the day. There was also probably some kudos in reckoning that bikes were so powerful that the tyre would slip on the rim Laughing

Not necessary these days.................but for a pinpoint rebuild, essential Wink

For a pinpoint rebuild the sad gits would want to use the shit standard factory fit tyres and fit rim locks . These bikes would never be used enough to spin the tyre on the rim anyway .

If the inner tube is squeezing through the hole take it back and ask them to explain what is likely to happen when the tube has chaffed against the wheel for 3,000 miles!

I would take the wheel back and not ride it till its fixed. They have made the bike dangerous to use in that condition. I would certainly want them to replace the tyre lock and then take the wheel to someone who knows what they are doing. If you dont get any joy out off em i'd then go to the citizens advice and trading standards. I think you should name and shame them so nobody else gets the same shoddy workmanship.

Under no circumstances get the hole welded up. This will just bugger up the wheel.

They sound a right bunch of cowboys.

It used to be common practice with older Enduro/MX bikes, to plug the hole with a plastic number plate screw Wink This is waterproof & won't damage the tube Exclamation

while I managed to take my vintage TT100 tyre off using tyre levers myself, there was no way I could put the new tubeless type thingy on, gave up after couple of attempts seeing tyre levers flying all over the garage, i'd say modern tyres have considerably harder edges than back in the 70's when rim locks were a must

As has been said. the modern tyre do not require these rim-locks.
I think you will find it is the rim-tape swelling from the hole in the rim not the actual tube. Nevertheless, it should be rectified with a suitable bolt ground and smoothed at head at taped, or rubber or plastic insert both methods, as suggested previously. Perhaps a vintage tyre may need them?

The tyres guys hate mucking about with those rim-locks and they are usually discarded. I had a rider and very original Z1 once. I purchased two stainless nuts and bolts and turned the ends to match the lock-rim bolt and smoothed the head and fitted both under the rim tape and made them into a bull-sh*t mock-up... Worked and looked the part well .. Gee, there is a lot to metal to take off the bolt head to get a suitable smooth profiled head.

Well I had my rim locks refitted when the tyre was changed, yes they can be a pain to get right (which is why most plces don't refit them) but the bike would'nt be right without them, you have to care about the small things. Wink

didn't refit my rimlocks at my last tyre change, just put the right length, right diameter, stainless countersunk allen head screws in, new rim tape over the top, job done been in for a year and a half now, with no problems.
