Re: BS 34's

Yes, opening the throttle will help spin the engine marginally easier - it's taking less effort to drag air through the carbs. Unless you're absolutely drowning the chambers in petrol though, it won't affect the plugs. If there's plenty of fuel then sparks are what's needed. I would agree that an in...

Re: BS 34's

Hello mate; As Al says, If it's all or nothing then I's be looking somewhere else than carbs for the problem - I'd expect the bike to at least be trying to fire if it was a shortage of/too much fuel getting through. Also, you say the bike was hard to start before the carb shenanigans and irrespectiv...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Graham; Attached are pics of the relevant section from the workshop manual for carb syncing. The pics also show you where the damper valves go. Ignore the brass pipes that came with the kit, you don't need them. Cut the rubber pipes that you have a shortish distance from one end. Attach the short bi...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hi Graham; Re. your problem with flickering needles on your gauges - did your set come with a set of damper valves? They look like T-pieces but have a small wheel on them. They fit in-line on each of the lines between the carb and your gauges (you will have to cut the lines at a suitable point to fi...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hello mate; just catching up on this thread. Looks like you’re getting lots of good advice here, and as r3sc said, really hoping you can get this sorted and spend summer (when it eventually arrives!) getting some miles in. Not much to add to all that’s been said tech-wise, but from what you’ve writt...

Re: Help with restoring Z1R electrics.

Hello mate: just been out and run a bit of string round the wiring on mine to get a decent idea of length. It told me two things: 1. The length of the wire from exiting the green plug to entering the regulator is 375mm give or take a few mm. 2. I now know how long a piece of string is. :D I've attac...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hi Gray; Good to hear you're making progress on the choke plungers. The small sections of brass pipe you've found are essentially the starter jets - they work in the same way as the pilot and main jets, but are usually fixed (as you say) to the bottom of the pickup pipes - it never occured to me the...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Gray; One more random input from me after looking at your last couple of pics. The brass tubes you mentioned earlier - are they the ones at the bottom left of each float chamber in the bottom pic? If memory serves that feeds the fuel/air mix for start/idle. I'm pretty sure that all mine look like th...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hi Gray; As per Warren's post (and Ultim8's earlier chart) for jet sizes - someone's been fiddling. Flat ends on the air screws are correct. Fuel level gauge is a good idea - £20 or so from ZPower. Choke plunger refresh also a good idea, but unlikely to be the cause of your immediate problems unless...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hi Gray Sorry you're still getting grief with this. Just looking through your last post - I assume the screws you mention on the lower bowl side are the drain screws? As long as there's no fuel passing there they won't make any difference to your problems. The air mixture screws - happy to be correc...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Oooh! Oooh! Liking Warren's idea to blow down the tube to check for leaks - but why stop there? Leave the bowl full of water/fuel as shown. Stick a bit of pipe over the inflow end to give your nose clearance from the fluid. Finger over outflow and blow. Bubbles in liquid? Deflated cheeks? Cracked pi...

Re: Z900 A4 fuel leak any ideas please?

Hi Gray; As per most of the replies abouve, most probably the float catching somewhere - I had it on the No.2 on mine after a carb refresh. Turned out that the float was JUST fouling somewhere on the float bowl (my money was on the new gasket being just bigger than the old, though not noticeable to ...

Re: Hydraulic clutch conversion ?

Hi Phil1r Are you set on a hydraulic conversion or are you just looking to make the clutch easier to use? I asked a similar question earlier in the year (also about a Z1R) and the easiest recommendation was an easy-clutch kit. I've attached my thread - there's also another thread from chrisu linked ...

Re: Large Shim tools.

Hello mate; Yep, got something similar, except mine has a knurled grip instead of the ball on that one. Works just fine once you get the knack; top tip is to either make sure your hands are free of oil, or wrap a bit of blue roll or similar around the grip so you can get a good purchase. Oh, and don...

Re: Removing back brake plate brake stay bolt

If you'd rather have penetrating oil in a tin rather than home-brewed I'd recommend Plusgas. Works a treat on most stuff - give everything a good long soak, then as already mentioned a bit of heat, patience and some creative swearing :D
