May I recommend a TDM 900 for your commuter.
I do a 40 mile commute and it ticks the boxes, cheap to run , insure etc.

Used both, without issues on starting or charging.. If you minimise the drain on any system , you reduce the chance of problems.

Fair play to ya, I ride my old tdm all year no problem! ...but that tent thing is wrong....
Hotel, restaurant, log fire in bar.....etc etc...much better end to a winters day

Your bound to miss the zed mark but a good result all round I'd say !
