If there’s still a capacitor in parallel with the point ( there to stop arcing across the points as they open) it could have failed and be forming a conductive bridge across the points. So try disconnecting any capacitor you see connected to the points.
Good luck, it looks like a very good find!

Re: Better brakes - options?ont brakes
Interesting, but I was hoping to stick with the Z1 fork legs, just installing new internals and new front brakes. But I suppose that I could adopt a more wholehearted restomod approach and change the forks - only I want to run wire wheels rather than alloys, and that presumably complicates things? A...

Re: Better brakes - options?
Thanks for the further information, and for the possibility of some aster brackets. Adrian H, nice bike! I’ll be using Z1 forks: do your CAD files cope with that? And us that a standard Kawasaki master cylinder I see? These people seem to offer Grimeca calipers for £125 plus vat, with pads extra. ht...

Re: Better brakes - options?
Thanks chaps, all useful advice, as usual. I’ll try to find a pair of AP calipers. Currently the bike has Z900 forks, wheel and calipers, and I have only a single Z1 caliper and disc, so would need to source a second disc and Caliper whatever I do (assuming that I want a double disc setup - which se...

Better brakes - options?
On my to do list for resurrecting my Z1 is improving the front brakes. Currently it has original 1970s discs which are hopeless in the wet. On my Z1000 I fitted EBC discs and that improved the wet braking markedly - there was no longer a 2 second wait for the brakes to work! The braking in the dry o...

Re: Magazines
Hi Foz,
If they’re going spare, and free, I would be glad to have them! I’ve got too many magazines already, of course, but I’m sure that these would fill some gaps.
Can collection wait until we’re free to roam again?
Thanks
Simon

Your sooty plugs could also be a symptom of a low voltage at the coils. Check out : https://www.wgcarbs.com/index.php/using-joomla/extensions/components/content-component/article-categories/89-coils for the “wired George” solution - which is basically adding a direct battery feed to the coils, switc...
