Sounds like you have them set perfectly for ethanol laced fuels.
Dark tan on the earth strap blending to black as it curves to the plug body then black on the plug base with the core insulator the same dark tan again.

Re: Driving me mad, give me some ideas please!
Plug caps and plugs both have resistors resulting in weak spark sooting the plugs at low revs.
At higher revs your getting a better cleaner spark due to increased charge voltage.......
Maybe? One or no resistor/s per ignition line only.

Kawasaki knew what they were doing. Just run with zero resistance caps and plugs. My fettled J doesn't miss a beat on stock coils.

Re: Source of small oil leak?
Normally any oil leak in that area is from the alternator wire grommet. They pretty much all leak there unless it's been gasket goo'd in recently.

Re: Raask Gear Lever
I hated the Raask gear and brake levers. Always thought they were short and a bit mickey mouse.
I cut mine and just used the pivot and made my own levers.

Re: Z1000J-J2 METER DAMPERS
There's a guy in Aus that does them. Don't have any contact details just recall seeing them about 3 or 4 years ago. On KZRider a guy made some from wiper blades that turned good. I'll try and track the thread down and link it. Found it. https://www.kzrider.com/forum/4-electrical/612906-1981-kz1000-s...

Re: KZ1000A2 Low Compression
65psi is very low even on a cold engine. Were all the plugs out and holding the throttle wide open and turning over using a well charged battery? I've never seen a Z engine, even an absolutely shagged one read below 80psi. .Additionally test your test equipment. Couple it up to a known psi output on...

Helicoils are fine for that application. You don't need to torque the hell out of them. People using fsm torque settings on 40+ year old stretched bolts and worn aluminium threads is the reason they've stripped.
