36mm CV Carbs onto a Z1000A1

A set of 36mm VM Mikuni carbs have come my way and I was wondering if anyone has fitted something similar to a Z900/1000A1 engine. The outside diameter of the engine side of these carbs is 42mm, considerably larger than the standard carbs which are approx 34mm. Are there inlet manifolds available fo...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

Admitedly, the subject matter has wandered around a bit Dave! I now know a bloke who has built Hodna race engines for classic racers who is confident it's something we can do in his workshop, so the latest is I'm going to strip the motor once more, buy some new exhaust valve guides and see how we ge...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

As you may tell from the huge time gaps between updates, this bike is not high on my project list but here's the latest; Rebuilt the motor with a new cometic one piece and another go at the RTV sealant in the camchain tunnel rubber seal recess, this time adding a little gasket sealant fore and aft o...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

So it's been a while but managed to get back to the zed motor this week. In answer to DeadZedDave, by the time i'd wriggled the head out it was not really clear where the oil was entering the chamber as oil had run everywhere. I suspect a badly fitted head gasket/head but thought id have a closer lo...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

Thanks Rob, I didnt use a smear of sealant fore and aft of the tunnel as you've suggested here, don't remember seeing that in the manual. I would think that would have been enough for the slight weep at the front i mentioned. What's your best guess regarding oil getting in to pot 2? Should I be look...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

A disappointing update regarding my motor. Quite noisy on initial start up but settled down quite nicely, however, once the expected smoke from burning off build oil had had a chance to disperse, i took it out for a gentle spin. Plenty of smoke at very modest revs. Home for a good look and there was...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

I've not sussed out how to get photos loaded from my mac but the bore size is approx 73.35mm. It's a three piece gasket all metal, riveted together in four places. The centre sheet is what looks like stainless steel and flat. The outer two sheets are black with raised pressings around the bores, the...

So this Sunday 23rd I'll be raising money and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health charities by taking part in the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride. Here is a link to my just giving page. A couple of quid and a minute of your time will help change someones life. https://gfolk.me/Chris...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

yes Philippe, sound advice, slowly taken. Immediately felt better as soon as i'd spent the money. I've gone off party line and bought the red 650 as much because if I need to remove/replace it i thought i'd be able to see traces of it better. Might even get the motor back together and running this w...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

Thanks for that. I'll get some ordered. I'm assuming 600 black,625 grey, 650 red, 700 degrees copper stuff is all adequate and you just buy the fastest colour!?

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

thanks for your extensive and thorough reply there. As the saying goes "there are no stupid questions" so I have another one! Just got my new Wiseco head gasket. It's the multi layer steel type one piece gasket. Question; Do I use a standard camchain tunnel rubber o ring, do I use nothing ...

Re: Kawasaki Z1000 A1

Firstly, sorry for your loss. I'd say you're bang on at that price and worth every penny of that to the person who wants a sorted Z1000. I remember watching the build thread and was very impressed by the attention to detail. That bike wants for nothing (except maybe an exhaust) in my opinion. Good l...

Re: Which head gasket for 1105cc pistons?

Thanks for these responses. In answer to DeadZedDave, I'm rebuilding an engine I've bought and found the 1105 Wiseco's in. It also had high lift cams which are water dameaged so i'm building it up with a standard head, standard cams, it'll have a four into one pipe as yet unsourced (I have a crappy ...

Re: ds2-1 electronic ignition on fleabay

I bought the ds2-1 but they're for a spare engine im building which has taken a while to get finished so I haven't tried them yet either. Just put the top on the engine to find I have no clearances whatever so it's going to be another week or two off faffing with shim swaps before i'm ready to put t...
