Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
Ok I just did that, I wound the stop down about 1/8 inch and set the slides to 0.8mm which gives me chance to drop them down. Also I found the needles were on the lowest setting so I put them in the middle, I will put in the 102.5 mains tomorrow.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
Ok, thanks for that, I will give it a go this week. I’ve got the slide gap set at 0.8 mm (engine side) and the pilot jets set at 1 1/2 turns out. It was set like this the first time, but the revs were too high, and the throttle stop was right off.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
At last I’ve got to the bottom of my problem, after fitting a borrowed set of carbs from Gus the bike ran ok. On inspection of my carbs I found the pilot fuel screws were in too far, I’m not sure how this happened because I set them to 1 3/4 turns out. The problem was that the tick over was too high...

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
No not really, I just want to know if the bike will rev past 3k, it doesn’t matter if it runs smooth or not.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
I’ve made sure that the valve timing is correct, unfortunately it made no difference.
I’m trying a different set of carbs next (thanks Gus)

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
I must apologise to Chris rooke, his book does say the pin above the arrow, I just took it that he ment the pin next to the arrow. Like you said, it would be better to say 29 from the arrow

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
Hi Kev, are you sure your diagram is correct? I thought the first pin was where the arrow was pointing.I’ve been using a book by Chris rooke and that’s what he said. The daft thing is I mistakenly had it right in the first place and I still had the same problem. Oh well I’d better put it right anywa...

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
Hi Chris, I checked and rechecked the cam timing. I got the arrow on the exhaust cam dead on the top of the engine block, then counted the 28 teeth. Then I checked several times again, Maybe I should have another go at it. Can you remember which way yours was out?

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
No I haven’t checked condensers. How do I check them?
I’ve just tried it with no air filter and no baffles, it reverse up to nearly 4k, when I refitted them it went back to 3k. Number 4 plug looked brownish, the rest black.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
I have been offered a set to try, which I will when I’ve run out of other options. It’s odd that it will rev right up in neutral, but on the road it won’t. Seems like something is breaking down under load.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
The pilot fuel screws are set about 1.25 turns out, I started at 1.5 but it was reving too high so I turned them in 1/4 turn.

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. I hope I’m not being too much of a nuisance.
I’ll try a few thing tomorrow, it does seem like it’s air related.
Thanks again
Nick

Re: Kz900 won’t rev over 3k
I haven’t checked electrical fault under load, it’s got a new kill switch. Timing and auto advance ok, fuel ok. I set float levels when I overhauled the carbs, new coils. The plugs get very sooty, in a very short time. The only way I can rev past 3k is by feathering the throttle instead of just open...
