One of mine has a piece of shaped steel brazed in and does not look to bad un-chromed. I was advised that few platers will touch it due to risk of tank contamination and unseen rust leading to the pipes dissolving. How have you stopped the uncoated steel from rusting Dave? I just keep it polished, ...

Usual suspects, if not carbs would be low voltage to the coils or something in the charge circuit breaking down. Maybe regulator or stator in that order.
