If the flywheel isn't loose on the taper as Al describes above and the rollers just aren't having purchase on the starter gear, the rollers start to skip and wear a series of small flats on the starter gear face which causes the skipping to become worse. I have a pair of 360mm CB1300 shocks I had on the back of my J before I replaced them with Nitrons. I'll take some photos later (it's a bit early now! ).
