Yes sounds like bent valve, gaps don't useally get bigger with shims they get tighter. Could the tip of slide needle broke off? Or choke butterfly screw come adrift.

Back in the day I used to use the push cable as a spare if the pull one snapped.
I never noticed any adverse effects, but then again im not fussy. :wink:

Don't know if this works but a guy on the KH forum reckons if you soak the rubbers in a mixture of winter green oil and xylene , ratio 30% & 70% for 24-36 hrs this softens them up a treat.

Quite normal for z range not to go through gears until engine is running. The jerking sounds like clutch is dragging, could be that after standing for so long that some of the fibre plates have gummed too the steel plates. This has happened to me and you have too strip clutch out and replace the fib...
