I think it is the zinc or possibly an other usefull element which has been removed from oils which causes pick-up problems with re-built engines designed to run with it. The top (short shaft) is from a J3 / 1000R and the lower in the picture is from a UNI. Neither sets of case had been apart before me. I also have an 1100R full gear cluster from unbroken cases and it has 14 teeth also. Needless to say its a UNI engine too. The kawasaki manual for the J 1,2,3, K1, M1...

Phil i have a short J input shaft and full gear cluster in a J3 bottom end.
