Neil, standard rim on my Z1b measures 80mm across and the widest vertical part on the outside of the spoke ring on the hub (before the hub flares out horizontally)on both sides for the sprocket carrier and brake drum) measures 70 - 71 mm across the centre of the wheel. Smoke on start up suggests valve stem seals are duff to me.

I agree with Paul that your rings wont have bedded in to the newly honed bores yet, which may account for the "red herring" compression readings. More so than the smoky starting.
