Re: Another Z650...

While over Xmas, I bought a 78 650 frame, complete with all important V5, which is the start of a new project for me. I only bought a frame as everything else, apart from the bodywork will be changed. The goal is to get the bike down to 400lbs dry, with over 80 bhp, along with modern suspension and ...

Re: Z650 / 1100

Still plugging away at the engine build, lots of delays when I realise I'm missing yet another dowel, seal or special bolt. With the cases bolted back together.. 2nd attempt.. the oil pump was fitted, then the sump. The sump plug didn't fit, as later realised the sump was actually from a later J or ...

Re: Another Z650...

Just heard that the turbo engine will have to come out of the frame and be stripped right down, as a serious problem has been found in the rebuilt engine. The engine was rebuilt at great expense, by some workshop 'down South' who I'm told are no longer trading. The Hyvo primary chain is so loose tha...

Re: Another Z650...

With the frame back from powder coating, and new stainless engine bolts made, time to fit the turbo engine into the frame, or rather fit the frame over the engine. Soon became clear that the turbo engine mounts were different from that of a Z650, the upper front mount being missing from the turbo mo...

Re: Z650 / 1100

Fitted APE studs to the crankcase, followed by the crank the third one I'd bought, the previous two didn't pass muster), then cleaned the transmission before fitting it along with the clutch basket. At this point I realised I didn't have the correct nut for the oil pressure relief valve, so couldn't...

Re: Z650 / 1100

Time to start the build.. start with something easy, the cylinder head... Fitted new oil seals and the new valves, then a used set of valve springs and buckets. Fitting the split collets was a bit fiddly, but found using a small pair of tweezers worked well. I actually had two sets of springs and bu...

Re: Z650 / 1100

The first problem to deal with was the fine grit/sand that was left in the engine from the vapour blasting. Blowing out the oil galleries in the cases and cleaning up the threaded holes with a tap was easy, if not boring. The same can't be said with the cylinder head. It's clear that the oil galleri...

Re: Z650 / 1100

A couple of years ago, I got an empty pair of Z1000 crankcases as part of a deal when I bought an incomplete project. I think these cases came out of a Mk2, but not sure. They sat in a corner of the garage for a year, before I decided to use them to build a complete engine. https://i.imgur.com/7BqaA...

Re: Nova certificate

It seems then I need to fit 'age appropriate' wheels and forks. I was aware of the points system, though thought this was more for getting a new plate. Its an odd points system, aimed more at cars than bikes. With separate points for engine and gearbox, and axles..

Re: Nova certificate

My question was more how difficult it would be to get a date certificate for bike with modifications (i.e modern 17inch wheels/forks), built around an imported frame (which happens to have a NOVA)?

Re: Nova certificate

With ref to getting a V5 for an imported frame, I have a 78 Z1000 frame, with a Nova. Given that in addition to the frame/engine numbers, photos have to be sent of the bike, would any non standard parts mean it would be refused a dating certificate? The frame, engine and bodywork would all be standa...

Re: Sticky Valve bucket?

Still waiting for new dowel pins for the cam caps, so haven't been able to fit the cams yet. On a brighter note, I removed the valve and spent ten minutes carefully cleaning up the walls of the bore using 600 wet n dry, followed by 800 then Autosol. I wasn't expecting much difference, but now the bu...

Re: Sticky Valve bucket?

Bit more info. I managed to remove the bucket this morning, had to use pliers to do so. Will investigate further later today. The head itself was bought with no valves etc, just its cam caps. It was one of the few I'd seen on Ebay that didn't have any broken fins. When it arrived, I had it skimmed a...
