They were pattern seals, however the ones i replaced were oem, albeit 40 yo. No1 smoked with them 2,3 & 4 didn,t. After replacement with pattern seals 1 smoked 2,3 & 4 still didn't.
the bit i don't get is that 2 &3 have lower compression but don't smoke.

There is a trick if the ht leads are too short as they are not replacable in the coil. Its not ideal but works fine. Cut the existing ht lead back until you get clean core wire. Get a thin steel self tapping screw about an inch long. Cut the head off, sharpen the cut end and screw into the cut end o...

Back of the valves was dry and oil free when I took them out to re seat them. Did new valve seals at the same time.
I have a spare engine and was thinking I could swop the head over and see what happens. If it still does it it must be cylinder / ring related. If not, it must be head related.

It had oil in the bores and was turned over every couple of months. Bores and rings look fine although having checked every other obvious possibility it may come to new rings.
smoke is evident from almost initial starting. I would expect a crack to show itself more evidently when warm?

Possibly, but it would be pretty ironic having had the rings off to check the bores/ring clearance that I managed to re assemble it and get exactly the same cylinder to do exactly the same thing.
This has really got me stumped.

650 resto last issue to resolve.

Ok gents, some may know I've been restoring my 650 which I bought new in 77. It's all finished bar 1 issue which I can't quite get my head around. It seems to be burning oil from no1 cylinder judging from the amount of exhaust smoke, but it runs as sweet as and colour tunes on all 4 to a nice blue b...

Re: Ignition coils

I have acquired a Z1000. 1977. From the USA, Could any member give me the procedure and resistance values to enable me to test my Ignition coils on this model. I will be grateful for any help with this. resistance across the input two wires should be 4+ and across the two ht leads should be 15 + to...

Whats the resistance readings from your old coils? My old 650 coils read 4 and 15. Manual says they should read 5 and 23 and to replace them if they dont. I bought a new pair from z power and they read exactly the same as my old ones.
what makes you think your coils are the problem?

A later post on z650 forum says that all the documentation I have from 1976 had a latter correction made saying plugs should be b7es not b8es. B7es is one grade hotter. Swopped to a new set of those and the issue seems to have disappeared. Who have thought 1 grade of plugs would make so much differe...

They are ngk, but not fake ones. An explanation on z650 forum says "Total gap size the spark has to jump increases, so HV voltage across the gap also does. Thus, this has the effect of increasing the spark enegy. Increasing the spark plug electrodes gap has -partially- the same effect, as the s...

runs better with plug caps resting on plug?

Can someone explain the pyshics behind why cylinders run better with the plug cap pulled partially off. On my 650 with the caps pushed fully on i can hear it miss every now and then, with them partially pulled off so you hear arcing between cap and plug it runs as sweet as a nut. Is the resistance n...

If the carbs had fuel in them when it was laid up chances are the slides are sticky and not closing fully. The 650 restoration im doing had to have the carb bodies soaking in carb cleaner for a couple of days before i could shift the slides at all.
