So just to keep you posted, three of my new exhaust valves gave a shim size of around 220-230 so i took 0,30mm off these to get them into the 250-260 range. Can anyone suggest the best way to re-fit my brake pedal return spring without scratching my newly painted frame?
Just to make this quiz harder, my footrest mounting pins are seized in solid so i can't whip them out to persuade the pedal past the stop bolt bracket.

I've just bought one of these cheap tools too. Anyone care to explain the best method of using them? Looks like you rotate engine until bucket is fully depressed, insert tool on the lip of the bucket, rotate engine backwards until cam lobe is out of the way, prise out and replace shim, rotate engine...

Are they all pretty flush then, i always assumed there would be some clearance and that the underside of the bucket only touches t...

and that's what i love about this forum. So much experience of familiar problems = several different 'fixes'. If i got a shim ground to 1mm, would the cam lobe still have clearance?

Thanks for the advice. Shaving the collets and retainer seems the most straightforward option then. I only suggested 1mm as I currently have no gap and it would hopefully bring a gap back. It may need less than that to get a gap. is there a way of measuring the valve height as it sits in the head to...

Yeah, i'm replacing it anyway (like always). My concern now is that my genuine manual seems to be different to Z1Bman's.
New one hasn't arrived yet but i changed one in my other Z a few months back and had the same measuring difficulties. Engine runs fine though!

my 1000A1 didn't have the o rings around the cylinder sleeves when i stripped it and it wasn't leaking oil. I've just had a sit down after seeing that they cost 7 quid each!
I'm questioning what it is that they do now.
Any thoughts on their essentialness guys?
