camchain service limit

Starting the rebuild of my z1000A1 engine and am replacing the camchain as they're not expensive. Checking things as i go, my camchain only measures 149mm over 20 links. Other posts going back years have quoted a length of 155-156mm and my genuine kz1000 workshop manual says Standard is 160mm with a...

Lovely bag of goodies there, ready to go back into some beautifully clean casings!
Couldn't help noticing what looks like a crack between the plug hole and the ex valve seat on pot no.2

Re: Cam cahin tensioner removal

It's a Z1000A1 by the way, so an automatic tensioner.

Re: Cam cahin tensioner removal

That's the problem, Phillipe. Someone has used a bolt which is too long. I'll put in a more suitable bolt when i do the job!
It's as much about finding the time to get in to my garage!

Re: Cam cahin tensioner removal

ok thanks guys. I have seen a lip on the outside end of the tapered shaft which i thought may mean that loosening the bolt was ok but removing it wasn't.

Re: Can't rotate engine backwards

In another hamfisted attempt at building my special i accidentally shorted out the battery on the frame for significant enough a time to goose the battery. Was replacing with lighter lithium ion one anyway but latterly noticed that the starter motor now feels very tight. Suspect the worst there but ...

Cam cahin tensioner removal

I need to swap my starter motor but the adjusting bolt on the tensioner is longer than standard meaning i can"t remove the motor without taking the tensioner bolt right out or removing the tensioner body. Can anyone tell me if I will be at risk of the cam chain going so slack as to maybe drop o...

Re: Can't rotate engine backwards

Yes, with the stator off it turns backwards but when I have the stator and cover bolted up tight it doesn’t want to turn backwards but goes forward ok!

Re: Can't rotate engine backwards

Thanks z1bman, the gear does turn with my hand but has some resistance. Turns forward ok but again it’s not a uniform resistance ( I’ve taken the plugs out to stop the compression resistance) and I suspect that the generator still isn’t exactly centered between stator and rotor. This was the origina...

Re: Can't rotate engine backwards

Thanks garyd. Picked that up in a previous post! Quick update. First took the generator cover off to check the starter clutch and the engine now turns backwards although much harder to turn it does still turn with the genny back on. Noticed that the clutched starter gear doesn’t exactly spin freely ...

Re: Can't rotate engine backwards

Thanks for the replies guys, here’s the latest. Whipped off the generator cover. And it spins backwards and forwards. The reason I stripped the motor was a slightly bent LH end of the crank which was causing the rotor and stator to foul. SEP straightened it and I’m just now sorting the electrics etc...
