An important consideration is the disc/s is/are very close to the spokes on these older bikes. I tried to fit some modern Tociko's to my CSR1000 and there was NO way they'd fit

Sounds more like a dodgy plug? If its an NGK, they seem to be iffy?
Swap 1 & 4, see if problem moves? If not, swap leads, they are both the same coil, so thats OK!
If its still No 1, carb could be flooding? Air screw out 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 turns.
