With the light set up on the 1-4 coil, HOLD the rotor in the fully advanced position and rotate the crankshaft until the light comes on....this should be on or as near as dammit to the 1-4 ADVANCE mark. If not, adjust the backplate and try again. Move light to 2-3 coil and repeat...if light doesn't...

From the Kawasaki spec manual, but others may advise for the better.

Would somebody confirm this method before Gavin goes ahead? If it has Alloy wheels, put a STRONG piece of wood (with some cloth wrapped around it for protection) through the rear wheel under the swing arm both sides. Put it in gear and tighten the rotor bolt so that the wheel spoke is hard up again...
