Probably doesn't help but v12 mercs also have a low air intake.
I've seen a hydraulic'd one of those and it was not pretty.

 while i was looking at it i noticed that the air intake nozzle which is indeed low down at the front was disconnected at the back so its been taking air in from the top rear of the engine, thus only a little got in and dampened the filter. i still have to bail it out inside, people are saying it will smell for a bit
