kH400 PROJECT LASH UP...ON THE DYNO!!! WITH PICS AND VID

#1 PostAuthor: kas750 » Thu Sep 22, 2011 7:41 pm

Some of you may remember this bike that i basically built out of leftovers from previous restorations.
The build thread disappeared in the crash a while back.
It is in the latest issue of practical sportsbikes and will be on the triples club stand at stafford.
Well the day of reckoning finally came today!!! Having completed the bike earlier on this year and used it at rallies and covered over 1000 totally reliable miles i thought it probably best to run it up on the dyno to see what power it has.
Dave at higgspeed kindly offered a while back to do a power run on his facility so today i had an afternoon booked off and arranged to take it up to Daves.
Image
I really was apprehensive as i wanted it to perform ok but i also wanted it to hold together as obviously dyno testing is very hard on the engine.
So this is the dyno room
All the big talk ends here!!!
Image
Dave warmed the engine up on the dyno and then did what was probably about 5 maybe 6 power runs.
We had a problem with the tyre spinning on the drum when the power came in and this gave false readings, but as the tyre warmed we had total grip and at last we could really go for it!!
Before i go any further i must say i can't believe how robust these 400 engines are even when given treatment that it would never get in the real world.
It was revved to oblivion (with my consent) yet didn't complain or misfire and after all that it settled down to a steady 900 rpm..remarkable really...
So heres a vid of one of the runs with dyno Dave at the helm.

So lets get down to the nitty gritty of this.
Heres a dyno print out of a standard s3 which has been previously posted.
As you can see it varies quite a lot compared to kawasaki's claim, but no suprises there!
Peak power at the wheel 30.1 hp
Image
...and now heres the print out for project lash up.Please bear in mind that we didn't do a tune, just a power run and it is on 100% kr1s jets and needle positions.

Thanks..Its definitely quicker accelerating than my H2...Mick Abbey reckons that there is probably at least another 10% from a modified pipe design and one of the zeeltronic programmable cdi boxes. But how far do you go???? It produces double the power of a stock bike reliably and tractably..I don't want to tune it to a standstill!! :D

Btw I had it on the triples club stand at stafford but it was tucked away at the back so it was difficult to see. When i was bringing it into the hall on friday a guy from classic bike asked to do some pics for a possible future feature( he took pictures of a lot of bikes) Anyway i leaned over his shoulder and took a pic with my phone! It was only after i realised that i had bent the master cylinder reservoir bracket in my van...It just bent back but looks crap on the pic

Ade, Yours was one of the bikes I really wanted to have a close look at, but as you say it was 'tucked away' at the back of the stand.

Jerry laughs at me, when I tell him we need 'punter walkways' on our stand's. I know he struggle's with the expense of the plastic chain.

But I think it's important that you can get close to the bikes.

Good to meet you on the Friday, just sorry the weekend was so 'crammed' that we couldn't speak more.
