ZRX 20th Anniversary Build

#1 PostAuthor: pertonpc » Sat Apr 08, 2017 10:11 pm

Hello Folks,
As some of you have spotted I have been fiddling with a ZRX for the last few months.
Got stripped to frame and had some cylinder head work done.
New paint, engine covers, hydraulics rebuilt etc.
Not quite finished but back on the road for testing & adjustment now.
With a last few parts awaited from Kawasaki.

The plan was to take a low mileage, fairly original example and take it back to showroom condition where possible.
It's a kind of celebration of 20 years of the marque, and the original dealer in Scotland who sold it from new supplied us with one of their new bike plates - just like when she came out of the crate - which was a nice touch.

We got her in mid November 2016 and the plan was to be finished for Easter and taxed for 1st of May - so it is running a little ahead of schedule at the moment.

First 40 mile road test went well with no leaks spotted afterwards. Going in for headlamp to be set to MOT standards on Monday.

I will do a photo story for the rebuild on the Zedrider website in the next few weeks if anyone is interested in the stages.

Thanks again for the advice & support with it on here

As the saying goes the Devil is in the detail and your attention to detail is VERY impressive Mark.

A proper bike in proper condition. :D

Ta Dave,
It was the first version of the 12 engine and has a few other upgrades from the 97 type.
The 1200R is the last bike Kawasaki made that can claim any kind of Lawson colours/ styling/ heritage as far as I know.
Hoping it might be collectable one day.

Very nice job Perton and of a condition I would be proud of!
Standard, condition mint condition Rexes have been going up in value for a few years now - riding on the back of the earlier Zeds which are becoming increasingly unaffordable to most.

A little more progress on the Rex.
Got a new set of lower clock covers and the silver idiot light cover fitted now.

Next on the list was to improve the bars from good used condition to new -

. . . with fresh end weights & screws

Bars are back on - but I am not fitting the end weights just yet - in case I can get hold of a new pair of rubber grips, to finish the job off. That factory thread lock will be a pain to shift if I get the new grips afterwards.

Progress is really slow now as I am trying to re-home all the good used parts before getting any more new stuff - but we are back on SORN now so no rush.

Hope everyone else is having fun with their winter projects.

Just curious, what was wrong with the old bars?

Thanks guys
old bars just had a few little rub marks from twist grip etc. - nothing major - but not show standard.
thought the finish was black chrome but I am not so sure now.
Paul - I leave the heavy restos to the ZEDI master

Anyhow when I was putting all the new parts on the bars I noticed that I had forgotten a small scuffed area on the brake lever.

Image

so I got it off and rubbed it smooth with wet & dry paper on a rubber pad (rubber pad adapts better to sanding a round surface) - until the marks were out. That left it with a matte finish.

Image

then it went onto the bench polisher for rough and final finishing.

Image

All the marks are out now but it has ended up a bit too shiny.

Image

Once back on the bike the extra sheen will dull back down over the winter to a more factory finish - to match the other side.

Image

just need to try and recycle my original rubber grips & throttle tube now - so I can get some brand new ones and get the bar weights fitted.
