I am thinking of upping the security by fitting some cctv cameras looking down the drive/garage doors/rear fences etc.

Has anybody on here had any experience with the cctv systems currently available from the likes of Costco and Maplins?
They look very impressive in the shop in nice warm dry conditions, I just wonder how long they survive outside and if they are actually any good.

Any advice and opinions appreciated.

records all 4 cams 24/7 & good wireless range.no probs in 2yr
had analog before same type,not as good but was still working when removed around 5yrs
def go for digi.
i use driveway alerts sensors in my outbuildings as well,if alarm goes off check cams quick!

I'd go for a hard wired system, a lot more secure than wireless although the wireless systems are very easy to install for obvious reasons.
Picture quality of most systems is very good these days & it's hard to spot any difference between some cheaper cameras & more expensive ones.
My preference is for Hikvision equipment, not the cheapest, but quality kit, well made & reliable. You can have the camera/s recoding 24/7 or set activation zones so the cameras only record when activated and via your house wifi can send pictures to you smart phone.
I think at the end of the day you have to decide how much you want to pay & buy accordingly.

Dogs are OK, but you have to look after them, feed them, take them for walks, put them in kennels when you go on holiday, take them to the vets.
CCTV is far cheaper in the long term & doesn't s**t all over your garden

I've got a pretty vicious cat but she probably wouldn't be able to stop a determined scumbag thief.

I have 4 swann cctv cameras around the house inc on the gge door, quality is not bad and I can monitor it on my phone anywhere around the world, it records 24hr a day for a month and then start s again, cost about 250 from maplin, but think you can get the same thing from china a lot cheaper but takes longer to arrive, the hard drive did freeze once took it back to maplin and they exchanged it there and then.. mine has cables so had to drill a hole through the wall near the tv, but you can get wireless. dont think it will stop them but might help after. as long as they dont steal the box by the tv.

My view.... CCTV might only be a brief deterrent and only takes a balaclava to make it useless, unless its backed up by an alarm.... and then you need to be at home for the alarm to be of any use. Thanks to crap alarm systems and ridiculous numbers of false alarms the Police won't respond to alarm calls any more. Invest your money in hard security such as a ground anchor and decent chain.

I'm looking to harden the hardware on my garage door too. What works is delaying a determined thief as much as possible and making the act of theft as noisy as possible.

Best deterent is to make it look like it's hard to get into. Most tea leaves are oppertunistic and want the easy option.
They want to walk up quick and be in within seconds.
Make it obvious the doors have hefty locks and would take noise and effort to get though.

Something like this will stop the garage door opening.

I go for obvious physical protection rather than camera's, although I do have motion activated spotlights on my drive that come on the moment anyone steps on it.
My (integral to the house) garage can be entered from the house too, the garage space is motion protected on the house alarm system. The up and over garage door is bolted on both sides from the inside. It has an external padlock, an additional security teebar with high security padlock on the bottom outside so It can't be folded over at either top, sides or bottom. I also put two trembler alarms on the door itself in case someone tries pushing or banging on it if its dark or I am in bed....oh yeah, I park two cars in front of the door at night too lol. Both would need moving to get to the door. There is one car there in the day. I am aware the bastards could still get in if they really wanted to - but they will have to work hard and noisily in full view on a very busy road to get there. I hope (sorry guys) they will find it easier to nick someone else's pride and joy
