Bought the Aoshima kit and now have an issue, what colour to paint it, and where to get the small amount of paint needed that looks standard?

Thoughts? Blue, Red, Green?

Just make sure you LINE the tank - that ethanol stuff eats plastic

Talk to hutch - pontefract panel and paint. He'll give you the run down on which primer, undercoat and top coat to use.

I suppose you're talking about a model kit on scale 1/12 or nearby?
Being a modeller myself, I used Revell or Humbrol paint, these come in very little tins and they used to be enamel so they can be thinned with synthetic thinner.
As a base coat I recommend a spray can of white or grey primer. Don't forget to degrease your parts with hot water and ammoniac prior to painting.
In a good model shop you can buy different shades of colour, even metallic colours.
You can allways try to mix the correct shade yourself . Remember that the colour of a model should allways be a bit lighter than the colour of the real thing. The smaller the model, the lighter the colour.
For best results use an airbrush, if you have the skills and take the time and effort you're able to achieve stunning realistic results.
I don't do bike or car models but WW2 military 1/32 or 1/48 airplanes or 1/35 armoured fighting vehicles and figurines.

@ pigford: as promised some pictures of the models I made several years ago.
@ all of you: I hope I don't offend or shock someone with certain details on the models.

Here we go:

A small scene depicting Jerry pilots playing cards while the Bf 109 E is serviced somewhere on an airfield in France
Scale 1/48 ; models Tamiya, figurines Dragon


Scale 1/32 ; model Eduard with photo etching parts


A scene depicting the 1918 spring offensive of the Germans near the town of Ypres
Scale 1/35 ; figurines from Eduard , uniforms painted with water based colors from Valejo, flesh parts: enamel base coat and oil paint on top


US Sherman tank
Scale 1/35 ; model Tamiya, accessories different brands; enamel base coat with different washes, drybrushing and chip painting.


A Panzer IV ausf D and a Halftrack Sdkfz 250/9 radio-command vehicle both from Tamiya, photo etching Eduard enamel base coat, different washes, drybrushing
Figurines : resin, different brands; paint: Humbrol enamel base, drybrushing with enamel, faces oil paint


A Cromwell tank entering a small town in Belgium in the early september days of 1944
The crew is provided with a bottle of beer from a local farmer to welcome them.
Model: Tamiya, Figurines: Tamiya
Paint: the same as described above.

You can see that on some pictures there are militaria and weapons. The weapons are legal, I have permits to own them or they are rendered harmless, demilitarised.
So that's a small selection of the models I've made in the past. The past few years I don't do modelling anymore.
My sight is not so good as it used to be in the past. I have about 300 model kits waiting to be build...I plan to live at least another 100 years
The last 9 years I do modelling on a scale 1/1 , I restore Kawasaki bikes, they are a bit of a model kit to me when I restore them.
I use paint, no glue! or... yes, I do use glue sometimes to attach the seat foam to the seat base
So you can compare it to modelling.

Thanks all for your contributions, this 1:12 model is going to cost a fortune in paint! There was me thinking it'd be a low cost excecise.

Like Philippe my eyesight is not what it used to be, I started Aoshima z1b kit a while back, I made a complete hash of it. It now resides in the wardrobe unfinished.
My standard was never going to a threaten Philippe’s degree of realism even when my sight was good

The paint job was really hard, but turned out ok I think. The badges were printed on photographic paper to make them look 3d which you don't get using the decals supplied. The fork and shock reflectors are diamonte from a hobby shop. GLASpainter orange for the indicator lenses. Photo print paper for my own (real) number plate.


It fell off the shelf and needs restoration!

You guys are unbelievable, far apart from my Airfix days of long ago.

your colleague does great work, nice models, beautifully build and weathered!
We all started with airfix models! glueing them together in 30 minutes or so
If we would have kept those models unopened in the plastic bags, blisters or boxes we would own a fortune now.
We didn't, we learned from our mistakes and developped our modelling skills and improved the models .
It's all about using the correct techniques and a lot of patience...
