Z1100R carbs.

#1 PostAuthor: J70hnu » Sat May 20, 2017 5:23 pm

Looking for someone who's fitted mikuni flat slide carbs to a Z1100 or Z1000j. I'm looking to buy a set but not sure if it makes my old girl run better.

Probably not.

A perfect working set of the original CV carbs will be quieter, much more fuel efficient, tick-over better, be smoother on response and you can drive easier; changing between throttle settings without having you face bang into the tank or have the bars wrenched from youre hands.

Flatslides do fit exactly and are a direct swop with no dramas for the original airbox rubbers, fuel tap location and are easier to get spares for and cheaper too if you found yourself needing diaphragms for the CV's. You should fit the correct carb to head rubbers which are fractionally different from the CV version.

Either 34 or 36 depending on what you want to achieve. 34 for excitement and faster acceleration on the road, 36 if youre off to Bonneville Salt Flats!

It's got a 1170 wiseco kit and it's had z1000j carbs fitted. I think I'll give the carbs a overhaul first. Has a flat spot and don't run to clever on tick over. It's got pinger tank valve (leaks). Was put on dyno before I got the bike. She was pushing 100 bhp. Where the best place o find overhaul kits.

Carb kits;..... viewtopic.php?f=17&t=40719

Do a forum search for CV carbs. There are over 90 posts with advice about their problems, treatment, cleaning / set-up etc.

I've got RS34s on my 1170, they're running a bit rich, but easy to ride with, and none of the wooliness you get with CV carbs, if I wanted CV carbs, I wouldn't fit the BS34s that it came with, I'd probably go for a set of a GSXR750M, much more modern and give better throttle response

CR33 another option for you. That's what I use on a couple of 1170 motors. No need to change carb rubbers but you will need to do away with airbox as they need velocity stacks. You can either use sock filters (Ramair) or Dave as Saisei will flog you a set of PMC filters that go on the ends of the stacks. No accelerator pumps so slightly easier to set up.

Both CR and RS will need push / pull throttle set up which then gives you space issues for switch gear on handlebars. I use early R1 but Kawasaki switchgear of similar vintage probably uses same wiring convention. You just need thin and a light switch. Pingel style tap required on both.

@ Al - clearance on fuel tap? Seem to recall back of tank needs raising slightly to give clearance for the tap? My CRs fit fine on ELR but it's tight and needed PTFE tape on the threads to get it tight and at the right angle to give everything space to move.

CV carbs prefer an airbox otherwise hard to set up and get running proper.

RS v CR - pays yer money take your choice!

With the RS34s the fuel tap just catches on the top of the carbs, I hadn't thought of lifting the tank up, I've got a Pingle tap to fit, but filing the existing tap handle would also solve the problem.

The accelerator pump on the RS34s are easy to set up, much easier than the older VMs

To lift the tank use another rear tank rubber mount and stick it on top.
