mk2 engine mounts and and
looking for engine mounts and boults for a z1000 mk2
my guess is they are the same as other z900? z1000a and ST? but not sure about that
this ear Mk2 I have was what was left over after the owner made a Harris out of the engine and electrics so there is lots there and I have had it stached in the loft and sheds since 1991, Now why is it coming out now, well I bought an odd ball Z900 a4 that had a mk2 Engine in it and last week I picked up a z900a4 motor to go in the z900 happy days
my aim is to do a dry build to find out just what i need to make the Mk2 hole again
I will need :-
head light
clocks bought some of ebay
wiring and elecy bits
front mudguard
exhaust's
new stanchions
rear shocks are not looking like much good
have loads of mk2 twofour seats but no standard ones

Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
Hi hartyb
I did the restoration of a MK2 ('79- A3)in the spring of this year. The bits and pieces are hard to find! Especially the little parts. I don't have spares left over from my restoration...
First an advice: try to find a parts manual of the Z1000MK2.
I can allso give you some advice on the parts you need.
The engine mounts and bolts are the same of a Z1000A2, NOT like those of an ST.(I think you have an ST yourself? If so, compare the back upper engine mounts)
The head light and clocks are the same of a Z1000A2 ( the head light shell has a rubber on top and the Rev counter red zone starts at 8500 RPM until 11.000 RPM).
The main loom is different of a Z1000A2 and doesn't resemble to the one of the Z1000ST due to the fact that most of the electrics of a MK2 are behind the left side panell.
The front mudguard is shorter than the one of a Z1000ST and it has holes on both sides for an M6 bolt to hold the front brake line rubber guides.
The exhausts are pretty much the same of a Z1000J, only the markings are different (KHI KZT00A). They don't look like the original ST exhausts
The stanchions of the front suspension are the same as those of the Z1000A2 and of the Z1R (D1). (The lamp ears of the MK2 are the black version of the chromed lamp ears of the Z750 twin)
The rear shocks of a MK2 look like the ones of an ST but they have a shorter spring.(Mines are Hagon and I have only original ST rear shocks on the ST in my collection)
The seat of an MK2 and an ST look the same but they are very different ( seat pan, rubbers, seat cover, dimensions, hinges)
To my humble opinion there are more similar parts between a MK2 and a Z1000A2 than between a MK2 and a Z1000ST !!! Seems crazy but take a close look!
When I can help you out with detailed pictures of my MK2 just let me know what you want to see in detail, I'll be glad to help you out.
Good luck with your restoration projects ( Z900A4 and Z1000MK2).
Greetings from Belgium

the differences between a little boy and an adult man is the price and size of their toys!
Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
MKII, Z1R and LTD have the same mounts
Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
Hi ZedHead
thanks for the correction, after all it's several months ago and I restored a Z400J in between and now I'm restorating a Z1000ST so...forgive an "old man" his error.
Cheers

No correction intended. Just additional information
Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
thank you for that FAB information
It may well have taken a lot of buying engine mounts for work out which were which
I am lucky as i have a selection of of Z1000 /900 to look at but not knowing what your looking for makes it harder
I was aware that despite the mk2 and the ST looking a little alike they were very different.
would love a standard set of exhausts for my ST.
yes some pics would be a big help when I get there, still collecting parts and my Mk2 engine is currently powering my Z900 A4 untill i swap it out, will check which engine mounts that has as I bought it with the MK2 engine in, as i had a Z900 engine to make that one correct
once again thank you Philippe and Zedhead

OK hartyb
when you want pictures of parts or where they're located, just ask. I'll see what I can do to help you.

Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
what I now need to work out is what engine mounts were used to put the 1015cc mk2 engine in the z900 a4 Frame
think I will need to compare some Z900 and z1000 mk2 to work it out, i have this feeling there is a bit of both may be?
just picked up some clocks on Ebay
next thing on the list is a wiring loom now armed with Philippe sound information my idea of using a Z1000ST one is out does any one know of any one selling new ones?

Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
Hi, I think the engine mounts are the same between 1015 and 900 motors.
Although the rear two brackets may have differences so support differing battery box mounts.

Re: mk2 engine mounts and and
Hi hartyb
to put a MK2 engine in a Z900A4 frame you need the engine mounts of a Z900A4.
The dimensions of the rear of a MK2 engine are the same of the Z900A4 engine, it's the frame and the layout of the parts inside the frame(battery box) that are different. So in order to put a MK2 engine in a Z900A4 frame you have to use Z900A4 engine mounts.
If you want to go for the restoration of a MK2, you'll need MK2 engine mounts (or similar) to fit the engine in a MK2 frame.
As for the loom of a MK2... I have no idea where you can get a new one ( ask Dave from Z-power, maybe he can provide one).
There are MK2 repro parts available in Japan and when you take a look at the Japanese websites you'll see that the MK2 is a wanted bike there.
Pleased to read that you have found clocks on ebay. Mind that the red zone of the rev counter starts at 8500 Rpm and ends at 11,000 Rpm!
Allso keep in mind that the MK2 cover for the idiot lights between the clocks has NO warning light for the stop lamp. This was omitted because there are two light bulbs in the rear light and it would be strange if both of them failed at the same time. It's a detail but details are important!
Good luck!

thank you once again for the invaluable information philippe
after your last very informative post, it crossed my mind which mounts I have in the Z900, Now I know which ones I am hunting for, does make things simple knowing what to look for and I can uses the z900 engine in my pre dry build as the z900 is all up and running witht he Mk2 engine in as is and the z900 engine will need some work
I have to say I got the right rev counter but they do have the tail light warning light in the warning lights something to find as i go on with my parts hunting
