J rear engine bolt

#1 PostAuthor: Coose » Wed Dec 20, 2017 12:58 pm

Afternoon all,

Having just dropped the motor out of my J it appears that the rear engine bolt is somewhat bent! The condition isn't too important as I have a couple of boxes of bolts to be plated, so long as it's salvageable.

Thanks in advance,
Coose :)

I bought a new one from CMSNL, I think it cost about 20 euros, try Cradley Heath as they might have one

Cheers Julian, though I think you maybe bought the last one from CMSNL...

It's funny, I was looking yesterday at my Zed before I pulled out the motor and thought it should really have a bolt at the bottom rear too. I'm surprised that those with more bhp than mine don't try to rip their motors out of the frame!

The pre J bikes only have one bolt at the front and one at the back, I used to know someone with a 1400 Turbo Nitrous one that made 236bhp, I don't think he ever had any problems with engine mountings, but I haven't spoke to him since the late 80s, so anything could have happened since then.

Have a look on the Z1100R1 parts diagram on CMSNL, the engine bolts are all on there and showing as in stock, even the front one which is usually impossible to find.

Cheers Julian, yes, I've just found that and Cradley Heath have them in stock too. I might try a local spot who makes bits from titanium to see if they can make me some long studs instead. They might be a little less prone to bending and hopefully similar in price.

I had the same bendy bolt problem on my CSR 1000. I bought a replacement bolt from CSMNL (It turned out to be un-plated!) and it wasnt until I tried fitting it that it occurred to me that the engine was out of whack with the frame!!
I had to take the whole thing to get it straightened and braced.
Is this a common fault with these (j) models?

P.S. Still available from CMSNL;

Mine had a brand new bolt in it when the engine went back in about a year ago, if you look at it from the right hand side of the bike it doesn't look particularly straight, but the bolt went straight in and everything lined up without any force.

I've got the old bolt in the garage by the way, it was too long and had a fairly big spacer on one end.

Cheers Phil, I've seen those but the problem with stainless is that if doesn't have the tensile strength of even an 8.8 steel bolt and so will bend before a stock one would.

I've had a price for titanium studs but it stings a bit, so I'll probably go with a stock one.
