Is NOS the only solution ?, I see pipes advertised in the US occasionally
was the material such poor quality that they failed early in their life ?

If you can find nos you should be head of the met. They rotted from the inside out along the bottom seem. Your best bet is either saisei or z power for replica's. Even then you'll be looking circa £1400.00 a set. They won't be stamped though.

73 were not stamped but here`s some that are ,if you have deep pockets --
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-KAWASAKI ... Sw-H1a4qEH https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAWASAKI-Z1- ... Swwzla42cR & there is a few more used ones on e-bay , postage is extreme & then there is import duty to pay on top . Happy hunting .

Original pipes were made of tin foil. Baffles plates trapped the moisture and they rotted through in a period that could be measured in hours. It's why decent one's are next to impossible to find and repair costs for rotted ones are simply uneconomic given the amount of time and labour it takes.
Go with a pattern set from Z power or the likes which are nearly identical to the originals, are easily available and have the advantage of being un-stamped which suits the earlier Z1's,

Bought my z900 new in early 77. By summer 78 they had started to blow.
So a Harris was installed....including the Frame!

Good originals do come up occasionally at a price. Last time I saw a set they were £2500. You could be looking at nearly a grand each now for your two uppers and since they rust from the inside, it would be hard to know the internal condition. As said 73's were unstamped.
