Hi Mark
the problem with the original rear shocks is that they 're all 38 or 39 years old...the chrome is rusted or damaged and the oil has gone or the springs became rusty...
It's possible to disassemble them and to repaint them but you need undamaged chrome on the steel inner tube.
If the chrome is damaged, buy new ones. I use hagon shocks, you can buy them with chromed or black painted springs and for normal use they perform good. Sometimes one has to make a compromise as far as originality is concerned...I prefer safety to originality.

Progressive suspension do shocks with the top shroud which look a little more like the origionals. They are a very good shock.

Thanks .i have konis on there which look very similar I was trying to keep it original as it’s only done 20000 miles with every thing else including paint work and pipes still in a really good condition I have only changed the handle bars to higher ones for personal preference

Hi Mark
keep the KONI shocks on your ST ! These are far better than the original ones.

Can only agree with Philippe, I put Koni 'dial a rides' on my ST. They are vastly superior to the originals and look right.
