1976 Z900 - Various Parts

#1 PostAuthor: Mark_K » Wed Nov 27, 2019 3:13 pm

Hello I am looking for the parts to complete a twin front disk upgrade on a 1976 Z900. What would be a good source for the parts and what is available new or NOS. What do I need to find used and does anyone have any of this stuff surplus to requirements. I am not keen on replica parts as I want to keep the bike original but if needs must that is fine.

I also need to change or repair/re-chrome the right side exhausts. I understand the repair route there may be an issue with re-chroming. What does everyone else do? Has anyone got any good used? Especially the lower of the two on the right side. Perhaps you have changed yours for a 4 into 1.

Hope you can help?

Mark

A NOS or good used original Z900/1000 twin disc set-up is a rare thing - discs are NLA as they're 7mm - repro discs are available but look too thin to my mind, but will do the job as others will state.

The exhaust can be repaired and rechromed providing the metal isn't too thin, but it won't be cheap - these guys: http://www.chromerestorationspecialist.co.uk/projects/chrome-silencer-repair/ quoted me £250 to re-chrome and £280 (plus vat) for the repair of two large dents and a previously welded joint repair on my CB750 K1 lower right exhaust (as below), luckily I found a very good OE one in the States after a year of searching.

you can have your m/cylinder drilled to 5/8" if you want to stay original, but new m/cylinders are very good for the money and are readily available. i have some drilled discs in "for sale section". exhausts occasionally turn up but not very often but full systems are available at a price (cybike) you'll also need a 2nd caliper but it's a worthwhile upgrade.

I did the twin disc upgrade on the last z900 I rebuilt, cost about £600 if I remember correctly (that was with buying a used set of the correct discs), I currently have a set of exhausts with a chromer in coventry for re-chromeing but can't say what sort of job they do until I get them back (about £700ish for a Z1000 system)

Be interested to see the results as I have a set of 4/4 I want to re-chrome.

I'll let you know when i get them back, should be able to compare them with the 'club purchase' repro system when it arrives.

First thank you for a very comprehensive reply. You have probably guessed I am new to sourcing Kawasaki parts and services the information is very welcomed. I managed to buy a very good condition RHS caliper that arrived today and I should have the disks sorted soon, a matching solid pair so that is also good news. I do want to keep it standard so would prefer to save the m/cylinder and replace it. I have been offered a used one with a new handle so i guess it just depends on the price of that against the price of a new one but where do I source a new 5/8 m/cylinder from and the rubber hydraulic hoses for that matter? I also think I need a twin pipe "T" splitter valve and an additional longer bolt too I believe. Then there is the RHS clamp for the hydraulic hose. Are all these available new? I have been offered a used one.

Many thanks for your reply. I think I am sorted on the disks, i have been offered a solid pair and i did find a lower LHS pipe NOS for $600. Seems reasonable but not the side I need. My bike has low miles and has rotted through being damp not use and only on the right side so my preferred route to to have them repaired or replace them with NOS or good used. I didn't think $600 for a NOS pipe was that bad if that is all one needs and am happy to pass on the sellers details if anyone else wants it. Where would you suggest are the best suppliers of new parts such as the m/cylinder and hoses?
