Z1000A1 airbox

#1 PostAuthor: Johno23 » Sat Jan 16, 2021 10:23 am

Just started a restoration of a Z1000A1 and I’m looking for an airbox for it. Any out there? I’m guessing they are fairly rare but thought I’d ask just in case.
Thanks.

Hi malc87

the "clean air system" was a device kawasaki develloped for the US environment regulations.
A tube ran from the air filter box to a vacuum valve where it was split in two tubes.
Those tubes went to the valve cover where there was a one way valve that permitted fresh air to be sucked in the exhaust port of each cylinder when the exhaust gasses were driven out thus reducing the amount of unburnt gasses and "cleaner" exhaust fumes...
Most of these systems were removed when US bikes were imported in Europe. The channels to the exhaust ports in the cylinderhead were blanked off. Also the air filter box needed to be blanked off to prevent unfiltered air coming in from the removed tube opening. The system was applied from 1979 models onwards (MK2, ST, J,...) If you want to know how that looked like just have a look at ebay.com and search for engine parts of the KZ1000 range.

THANK YOU Philippe.
That is very well explained.
I always wondered why some had the plate on!

Sorry for the hijack.
My head has these valves, but instead of being plumbed into the airbox there is just one short pipe joining the two valves. I thought it was a bodge. Could this have been the way one of the ones with valves that made it to Europe left the factory?

Hi Mark

I don't know. I assume we can be sure that EU bikes didn't receive the US "clean air system". Perhaps it was a US cylinder head and/or valve cover that someone in the past mounted and decided to connect the two intake channels to prevent air being sucked in. Who knows???
I've seen strange things on old bikes during my restoration projects and I hope to see more, even stranger things, now that I'm restoring "younger" bikes.

Thanks Compo That's what's missing. I could have sworn the parts manual shows this, but it does not. I must have seen it in the work shop manual.
