Hi,

I’m looking for a single shim bucket for 650B1 in good condition.

Does anyone have one for sale?

Kawasaki Part number 120321001

If anyone has a good one please let me know.

Cheers.

Hi,

Thanks for posting but I managed to buy a used one.

I do need a load of shims now though as now I’ve fitted the replacement bucket I don’t have any clearance at all so I’m going to have to get a few smaller ones to establish a baseline.

Do you have any shims around 2.35/2.40?

Hmm that is low in the range, I will have a look.

I have 1x220, 2x225, 2x240, 4x245, 2x250, in the low to mid range, all my others are higher I am afraid.

You should measure the distance of the bucket between the face that sits on the shim and the face that the cam runs on to make sure it's the same as yours.
All those shim under buckets look the same throughout the 650 to 1100 range but on some later models the raised portion that sits on the valve stem is slightly taller and will reduce available valve clearance.

This is really strange.

I removed the offending bucket where I had no clearance and checked that the shim in it was 2.60 which is what I measured it at.

To give me some clearance to establish a baseline on this valve I turned a brass shim to exactly 2.30 which should have theoretically given me a clearance of 0.30mm less the amount of interference which I appeared to have as the bucket wouldn’t even turn with the 2.60 fitted.

Anyway I then fitted the 2.30 brass shim and reassembled the cams etc only to measure the clearance at slightly over 0.40mm , what’s going on???

I checked and double checked the numbers and the procedure and all was ok.

So, I then removed the brass shim and replaced the standard 2.60 mm shim, reassembled and re measured and found the clearance to be spot on at around 0.005” or just over 0.10mm.

Turned the engine over a number of times, re checked all the clearances and all were good.

I really can’t explain this at all.

I did turn a small flat ended round bar and used it to check the relative dimension of the inner bucket face and the top of the bucket on both old and new buckets and both were identical, although Rob is correct as I have had them differ in thickness before.

I can’t explain it but all is well now and the motor is now finished and ready to go in the frame.

0.10mm is on the lower limit and will need the next size thinner shim..
You want to be at 0.15mm.

I always measure the clearances using a good quality set of imperial feeler gauges and when I measured it the 0.005” went in nicely but the 0.0055” didn’t so it’s somewhere between the two limits ie, 0.08mm to 0.18mm.

The specified tolerances equate to imperial sizes of 0.00314” to 0.00708” so I’m reasonably happy with it at a loose 0.005”.

Cheers.

0.10 - 0.15mm is the required tolerance. As Rob has said.

0.08mm - 0.18mm is the tolerance range for B1.
