The only way is to take the head and barrels off.
It inserts from the underside of the barrels.
It may be the remains of an old one so remove the camcover and lift the exhaust cam out of the way and you will see if there is a complete one in there.

sadly this is such a common problem.

As Rob said - head and barrels off. You may well be doing a bit of a refresh whilst you're in there.

Hopefully its not been ridden too much in this state.

Well, I’ve now jumped in with both feet on my first complete strip and rebuild. Gulp. So happens that the cam chain guide had simply - well - disintegrated!! It wasn’t pretty in there but I can imagine it could’ve been a damn sight worse. Thanks for all the help so far. God know I’ll probably need more over the coming weeks.

at that point i'd do a full strip/clean/check.

Split the crankcases and check all the bearings etc.
