Z900 Cylinder head cover plug

#1 PostAuthor: Harris995 » Tue Aug 03, 2021 8:31 am

Hi. Newby here. I've not had this bike for long, only been out a couple of times. Was running it on my drive yesterday and after 5-10 minutes, one of the cylinder head cover plugs popped out. Should I be worried?

Cam end cap?
They are made of rubber (sort of) and shrink with age.
Zpower will do new ones or you can use a bit of rtv to hold in place.
Cam cover off, remove old gasket, smear thinly around cam end cap and fit, new gasket smeared thinly both sides with grease, refit cam cover. Leave a few hours for rtv dry a bit. Job done

Assume it's the black rubber half moons. New rubbers is the way to go, fit with Black RTV.

or you can buy Black powder coated aluminium ones.

Thanks for replies, and the guide to replacement warren. Are the aluminium worth a try, been reading on here that sometimes they don't fit, due to Kawasaki manufacturing process?

I fitted the black ally ones sold by Z Power and they fitted perfectly.

It's a common-ish problem & has been for years. I had one pop out on the North Circular in 1980, on the way to France !!
I'd serviced my bike before leaving & fitted new plugs as a precaution. Luckily I had taken the old ones & gasket glue with me, how lucky was that ?!! Maybe I had a premonition ?

About twenty years ago I got some alloy ones made with a groove in so they couldn't fall out & had them anodised black & that's what the aftermaket ones are like now.
They are most likely more expensive than the standard, rubber items, but they will never fall out.
You can check they are a good fit before fitting & a little fettling with a thin strip of emery and/or a fine file, if needed, should get them fitting perfectly.
