If someone were to replace the standard J CDI (IC Igniter) system with a Dyna 'S' they would need to replace the rotor part of the advance and retard unit with the Dyna one which is different and works in a different way.
The small replacement Dyna central rotor has a small round magnet embedded in it and the Dyna pickups take a 12 volt feed from the coils. This means the pickups and Dyna rotor are self contained. The pickups are designed to detect the passing magnet.
The rotor part of the standard J advance and retard unit is designed to work with the CDI (IC igniter) and has no sensitivity to proximity magnets wizzing by.
They both work in very different ways and have no compatability with each other.
I think the baseplate of the standard (earlier bikes) points / condensor setup fits in the J housing. If so have you got one or considered that as an option?

Thanks Al, that was what I was after and explains the incompatabiity. I have both points/condenser plates and a Dyna plate (which I was saving for another build) so could try but I was hoping to stay electronic if it was just a coil swop and ditch the IC.

Did you ever get around to trying the early points / condenser / base plate / advancer on the J / Gpz motor ?? I'm interested to know if this works !!

No Dave, I wanted to bench test run the motor and thought I had an ignitor issue. As it turned out the ignitor was fine. It was down to the loom. After I rigged up a test loom all was good.
There is no reason points/condensers wouldn't work with the relevant mods made to the loom/advancer etc though.

What's your reason for wanting to do it?

Hi Again, short version.... I'm building a couple of projects which will run total loss ignition - no alternator / charging system. Research says points / condenser will run longer time than electronic from a given battery capacity, so I'm looking at points on a J based motor and also an A4 based one. It made sense to ask if you'd already done it ! In the past I've put A3/A4/J/Gpz type ignitions on early motors but never early ignitions on later motors. I know the Z1 through A2 motors use the centre bolt through the advancer to keep it concentric (bolt with close fitting /oversize diameters matching bore in advancer and end if crank) A3/A4/J/Gpz type use a metal ring on the back of the advancer which sits over the end of the crank with different crank oil seal / housing... and I've not yet got around to doing a trial build to see how it will work with the early / points type advancer on the later crank..... I'm sure there'll be a way but I don't want to machine anything / irreversibly alter anything - if anyone in Z1 OC or on the forum has an answer I'd be interested to hear - thanks ! Dave
