Z1r speedometer cable
I'm selling my 78 z1r and need to put a new speedo cable on it. I bought the bike in 1998 and know nothing of its history before that but it appears nearly completely stock parts.. I ordered a cable that was supposed to be for 78 z1r part number 54001 1015 but it has the wrong diameter threads to the drive end (too big), and the inner cable is too long. My bike has the sensor that attaches to the speedometer and the cable screws onto the sensor. Does anyone here know about these sensors and what the proper cable is for my bike? I'd appreciate the help. John
Re: Z1r speedometer cable
It is the correct part number so get in touch with your supplier and complain, the sensor is for the self cancelling turn signal system but the connecting thread is the same as is on the instrument, you could try and contact Zpower in the uk, they may have the correct part, but your first call is the supplier that has given you the incorrect part maybe as a genuine mistake.....good luck

Re: Z1r speedometer cable
Thanks for the reply. My bike does have a 19 inch Morris mag on the front but has all the original brakes and I think the speedo drive would be stock. That is the first issue as the new cable has a larger diameter where it screws on at the axle. I have the old cable and the housing can be used with a new inner cable but the one he sent is about an inch to long inner cable. The seller generously agreed to refund and told me to keep the one he sent. I'm thinking as a last resort I could try to cut an inch off the new inner and square the end so it fits and drives at the speedo. I live in the USA so easier for me to try and get info about it here by phone anyway. Before I order another new cable I'd like to get the dimensions so I could be sure it is correct. Perhaps my bike has some mods that I'm unaware of that are the difference. Thanks again

Hi Luvolbikes
a standard Z1r (D1 from '78) has an 18 inch front wheel, not a 19 inch. Perhaps, when they changed the front wheel in the past, they also changed the speedometer gear in order to get the correct speed on the speedometer. That might explain why a stock Z1r cable doesn't fit on the gear. It's just a wild thought but it could be the explanation.
