How do you know if you have enough grease in the swing arm using a gun and the nipple?
does it simply come out when full?

The grease will show either end of the swing arm where the caps are.

That’s the ball ache with grease nipples. It must come out of both sides.
You may have lots come out one side but not the other, then it gets messy.
