Re: Bike Z900 A4 not running correctly (FINALLY SORTED)
looks like fuel has got under the paint around the filler
Re: Bike Z900 A4 not running correctly (FINALLY SORTED)
My paint knowledge is very limited, clearly others is more so, but yes i know enough not to overfill tank into neck part and never do! The top part of filler is indeed not painted, i assumed this was to allow a better seal when cap is closed, the cap on mine has a spring loaded rubber seal, which seems to fit snugly when closed and its new and supple so should seal relatively well, I've never noticed any fuel coming from it when riding, so presume it does seal well, but not going to tip upside down to test it. Other then tipping every fuel nozzle onto floor 1st before putting near tank how can you anticipate if theres any left over fuel dregs within , may well have to do that from now on!
I'm also well aware not to leave fuel standing in 1 place for long periods, but as stated i presumed splashes would just run off and in any case be protected by the lacquer. Hence why im amazed this occurred
Anyway i sent Shaun a photo of the damage, his reply was he too has never seen this before, other then once when someone left a fuel soaked rag on it, which isnt the case here. So its not just me thats mystified.
On the plus side he says he can sort it out, without having to repaint the complete tank and graphics etc. Which is good news of sorts.
Obviously its a hassle as got 2 trips and it will be away a week, which i could have done without.
As only just got bike running well may ask if i can leave it until the colder weather and at least get some warm days riding in first.
As for Shell not being bothered you may well be right, however feel they should take some responsibility, after all I'm a customer of theirs and paid for the fuel, its their Fuel blend and their own liveried garage.
Whether they will or not? Regardless i've made them aware of the damage it caused.

Really pleased that your bike is running well now.
I know you were following my thread, but I’ve had little to no time to work on mine in the past couple of weeks, but have managed to get the carbs finished and back on the bike now. Hoping to try it out in the next couple of days and fingers crossed all will be well.

Maybe some of the fuel that spilt ended up in the cap and as you rode run to the spot at the hinge and dripped onto the tank without you realising, I always cup my hand under pump nozzle until right over opening.
Re: Bike Z900 A4 not running correctly (FINALLY SORTED)
can we see a pic of the paint around the filler, definitely sounds like that is your problem

Thanks for replies,
Kev yes anythings possible, wasn't specifically looking to be honest.
I just know the end result. Not nice when you've been through the whole restoration process, despite spending a small fortune and a year and half of time, finding it refused to run correctly, having then to admit defeat and let someone else finish it off, getting that sorted, now this! Perhaps its time to reconsider my options perhaps get tank sorted and re evaluate.
What i have learnt, is the Z900 isnt the easiest of bikes to work on and in my case dont have sufficient knowledge, correct tools or physical ability to keep it that way.
1975-S1C Yes did follow your post with interest and glad youve got your carbs working as they should, since Rob did the adjustments on mine it made a vast difference to the way it ran, (of course in my case there was several other issues he corrected too), so hope yours is not the same.
Will take a photo around filler area, but from memory paint goes all the way up the filler neck and ends at the top where rubber seal is onto bare metal. If it didnt i could see how if it got under the paint, then may well explain the damage, but cant see how it got under the paint? That said if the fuel wasnt left in the nozzle it wouldnt have splashed in the 1st place. Suppose another option is twist nozzle upwards all the way until over the tank then slowly twist it downwards before commencing fuelling, thing is not all nozzles pivot easily, the one at Belton had really stiff hoses and didnt extend easily making it hard enough not to the chip the tank with nozzle or filler.
