Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
Thanks for your reply, but can anyone please clarify the points with the pictures -
The green suppressor in the picture, where does that go and what does it attach to.
The long wire coming out of the cover - what do the two connectors connect to please?
The regulator, what does it connect to on the frame please?
The yellow and black wire with the circular connector, does that attach to the connection on the small black box?
Hope you guys can help as I am stalled at the moment.
Thanks

The long wire coming out of the cover - what do the two connectors connect to please? Looks like electronic ignition wiring.
The regulator, what does it connect to on the frame please? Don't know. I have never owned a Z900
The yellow and black wire with the circular connector, does that attach to the connection on the small black box? Don't know. I have never owned a Z900, but it is an earth wire so would assume it attaches to frame or engine (possibly where the battery and starter solenoid leads attach.
Hope you guys can help as I am stalled at the moment.
Thanks
Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
That BLACK/YELLOW wire should be an earth for something. DO NOT connect it to that starter motor relay in your picture unless you are certain what it is for !!
The item connected to your hazard flasher relay is a double diode unit which prevents current flowing down certain wires when the hazard flashers are in use.
I'll try & get a picture of mine later today showing exactly where it mounts. The mounting screw should be a M6x1.0 cross head screw.
The black twin core cable coming out of the bottom of the right-hand engine cover is from the contact points & connects to two bullet connectors that should be routed down the right-hand frame tube, just aft of the air filter.

Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
This is just precautionary note. I see the picture of the starter solenoid/earth wire shows a very old and crusty side panel grommet in shot. Having recently had an issue with a self detaching side panel whilst on the move I would recommend replacing these if they are all worn with new (genuine) items to ensure a secure panel fit. They're not expensive.

Thanks for coming back, are you saying that the little black box is a starter motor relay, I have no idea what goes on that terminal however the connector is also black and yellow see the pictures below.

Thanks for that advice - I will definitely change them once I have the wiring sorted.

Thank you, would you be kind enough to send a picture of the two bullet connectors in situ too if you can get to it., Any wiring pictures that people have would help especially how the wires from the two handle bar switch gear controls connect, I have two trailing wires from each one that are outside of the connector sockets and are blue.
Thank you

The "little black box", with a metal cylindrical part attached is indeed the starter motor solenoid, (or relay if you prefer to call it that !).
The two M10 nuts secure the two heavy cables between the battery & the starter motor. In other words there is one cable from the positive terminal of the battery to the solenoid & one from the solenoid to the starter motor itself.
The "other" BLACK/YELLOW wire that you refer to, that is soldered to the solenoid, is in fact the earth from the internal coil that operates the heavy duty contacts within the solenoid. There should be another small gauge wire on the solenoid, which will be from the START button on your handlebar switches.
I've been a bit busy today with a water leak at home so haven't taken any pictures yet of my bike, but I will shortly & post them up for you.
Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
I've just had a look at my bike & the connections that I thought were by the air filter on the right-hand side are actually the rear brake switch connections !! Sorry about misleading you there !! The twin core cable, which should have a BLACK & a GREEN cable inside, exiting the points cover, should run under the engine & up the frame tube, behind the rear brake pedal, aft of the air filter on the right-hand side & route up under the fuel tank to connect to the two coils.
The pictures below show the mounting position for the hazard flasher diode pack & the other picture shows the starter motor solenoid. Hope this all helps ?

Thank you, so in the first picture am I right in thinking the top right is a thick black earth and bottom left a live feed from the battery?
Great to have the twin core cable verified too. Thank you

NO ........ !!

The thick cable with the red cover on is the positive from the battery & is live all the time the battery is connected.
The thick black cable with the black cover on is the positive (+ve) feed to the starter motor, but only when you press the START button. Once you release the START button that cable with the BLACK cover on goes back to zero volts.
Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
Morning everybody, so my bike is a 1976 A4 and still working on wiring.
Today I have a points connecting to coils query and would be grateful for input please, I have had a lot of help so far and think I am getting close to testing.
So on my left coil - feeding 1 and 4 cylinders I have one red and yellow wire and one black wire, I connected the red and yellow to a spare red and yellow coming from the loom just using logic.
Then I connected the black wire from the left coil to a black wire that comes from the points. It sounds logical to me?
Then on the right coil I have an orange and white wire and a yellow and black, assuming that the coil needs a live is the orange and white likely to go into the double connector that is red and yellow, therefore leaving the black and yellow lead from the coil going to the white wire from the points?
Is it me or does the wire colouring provide a layer of complication that doesnt seem to be of any help!!
I also have a white and red wire dangling loose under the starter motor, does anybody know what it does or where it goes please?
Thank you all for your help so far.
Pictures here for clarity -

Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
Here are the points wires down in the casing, green and white visible and so is black. Am assuming that the green feeds the white wire so does the points white connect to coil orange / white wire or coil black / yellow wire which I thought was earth?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Rebuild Queries and a couple of picks
All I can say is on the 1000r there is a white/red wire going to the starter solenoid/relay. I'm sure someone will correct me or confirm.
