The colour for the stripes on a ELR replica paint job?

#1 PostAuthor: dixiethedog » Tue Mar 18, 2025 9:19 am

Hi all, I have a set of Z1000J bodywork that I need to refinish. I have bought Kawasaki lime green paint, but even so, I am still not 100% sure in which direction to go?
I could go back to a factory standard Z1000J paint scheme, but would that be boring?
I have always enjoyed the look of a Lawson replica, so if I go green which stripes work best in your opinions?

By the way, I only have the tank, side panels and tail piece. I figure that most (or a lot of) bikes will have different front ends on by now, so as I will be selling the parts do I need to worry about a front mudguard along with the fact I dont have a fairing? Should I buy a fairing?
But at this moment it is not a for sale ad!!

In the pictures below, we have variations of blue and white stripes along with black and white. Some of the stripes are higher up on the sides of the tanks and the others lower down.

If you were going to paint (or have painted) a Z1000J, whih one would you do? Fatory stanard, or low stripes, higher stripes, blue and white, blak and white or what? :D

Not sure there ever was a black white combo. Both of your pictures are the blue white scheme.
Some had a gold pin stripe between. Some ad a crest below the filler cap.
I painted a genuine R1 for a mate and when striping back to bare metal there were several versions with low, high, with gold, without gold and when I finally got to the factory paint it was the white/red/blue version.

He wanted to go with a green/white/blue scheme with gold pinstripe.

Specific years and R1 R2 had specific paint options.

That looks lovely. :D I think when I mentioned black and white stripes, these would not have been factory, but I am sure that I have seen Eddie Lawson on Zeds with the black and white stripes. Certainly custom ELR's have been seen with them.
I might just go with the factory style like yourself. I have a load of jobs on, so the Z1000J parts won't hurt to sit and wait their turn. But lime green is my own favourite colour choice at the moment.
But going back to the "That looks lovely", you must be very proud to be able to do jobs like that. Ten out of ten. :D

Thanks. He did provide decals but to me they looked shite so I painted the entire thing including the crest/shield.

Think GPZ's had a black white stripe scheme.

If you check out the forum link below you should be able to see the factory variations.

For my own J I went off piste some what.
Mazda Soul red.

There you go, throwing a spanner in the works with soul red. :D

Even though I have bought the lime green paint, seeing your paint does make me think, "Do I go custom, do I go ELR or do I go back to a J standard?"

I have used the soul red (V46) before and loved it. One of my neighbours has a new Mazda in that colour and when I walk the dog passed it I can stand and look at his paint for ages. In the sun it is beautiful. I recently painted something in a Suzuki car colour (Burning red pearl metallic, code ZWP) which I think also comes close to finish of the Mazda colour.
I may have to go back to the drawing board and give this a bit of a rethink.

  it's a dilemma! Even when you've made your choice if your anything like me you'll see something else to make you question your choice. I'm currently painting a second body set for my J in black base with gold and red pinstripe similar to the H style. Once I've finished it I'll see something else

It's been on the bike for a few years now, hence the second body set being painted black, I get bored too easily

It certainly is a dilemma! Certain bikes need to be one colour. 1200 Blandits should only be that factory metallic reddish colour (I am right next to one, but can't remember the colour name or code). Gpz's should only be red. GSX11EFE's should only be black and red with the thin silver stripes...and Lawson replia's should of course be green. I am not really a blue person, but I think the new-ish Peugoet blue that looks a bit like candy is nice, in the same way soul red is. BMW (cars) do some lovely greys that in the right light almost look like a black chrome and other manufacturers have some great colours these days.
As you say, "It's a dilemma". :D

Sorry not all GPZs need to be red ima . Same bike red pic on the day I bought it from some shop in Sowerby Bridge & green 8 months later painted by either devil or demon paint in Newcastle . Pics in 85 . Paint it any colour you like its yours , be yourself.
