Z1R losing charge Help Please..

#1 PostAuthor: SuffolkZ1r » Mon May 12, 2025 1:10 pm

Hi guys. So my Z1R is not charging up when running and also wouldn’t start after a long ride. Checked while running with multimeter, revved to 4K and volts stayed the same about 12.5 Pulled the side all apart and found that one of the copper coils looked black and burned out. Decided to buy a good used one and replace starter clutch and while at it replace the combined regulator/rectifier all in one.
Pulled it apart again and found that the rotor bolt had worked itself loose ! So I took out the bolt and was ready to then try and take out the rotor with an extractor but easily just pulled off with my hands!?
So I inspected everything inside and all looked well, re assembled all again and put Blue locktite on bolt hoping that it would do the job.All good now, started and revved to 4K and was reading nearly 14v. Then I Went on a long run about 40 miles with a stop in between with lights on just to make sure everything was charging. Bike ran lovely so got home switched off ,then went to try and start it again and just a very slight noise but otherwise dead! Checked battery and showing only 10.5.. Next morning showed a bit more but did start with low volts.
So, Just pulled it all apart today expecting to find the rotor bolt loose again but is ok. ??
Any ideas what could be causing this problem? Thanks in advance Gary

What about the condition of the battery?

Is the regulator/rectifier earth wire connected directly to the battery negative terminal? ie, not earthed to frame etc
I see Zed people.

Hi. Yes, I earthed it directly to the negative battery terminal. Thanks

i am having similar charging problems as Suffolkz1r on my a4. New yuasa battery will sometimes not have enough on the button but starts first time on the kick. It just about makes 13v across the battery at tickover and doesnt move much at 4rpm. Im thinking of buying the zpower reg/rec but i have the hodna superdream reg/rec fitted and the wiring looks different and not sure how easy it is to change to zpower unit.

(What about the condition of the battery?)
Thanks Mark. I will check this out today again although battery has been holding its charge well all through winter as I do periodic checks on all my bikes.
