Re: Carbs
Thanks again Al,
There appear to be two specs for the 1000R carbs? Top one is for J's and 1000r's bottom is for r's only. The main jets I have match the bottom spec. I will need to check the others. How do I know which spec is correct? I have no visible mark on the needles, but they appear to be thick parallel rather than tapered as I would have seen on other bikes I had.

white is condensation, blue is oil and black is fuel.
Re: Carbs
A long time ago I managed to seize the oil scraper rings on the middle pistons on my original Z1000J.
What came out of the exhaust was more white than typical 2-stroke blue.
In fact it looked just like Mark's photo.

The jets appear to be correct, at least for the standard Airbox set up. The needles, in the picture below appear to be off standard with 7 grooves. There also appears to be considerable wear around where I'm guessing is the closed throttle mark. This is probably a good place to start. I'll look into a set of needles.
Oh please God let it be condensation!

Re: Carbs
I rang around for Needle jets and Jet needles for the carbs. I have to say I understand why you all speak so highly of Phil and Dave in Z-Power, however the parts are no longer available. This is obviously why they were not changed during the refurb.
I tried Allens and Cradlie Kawasaki, no joy.I can't get through to NRP so I emailed and am waiting for a reply.
Any ideas what other options I have?

It does look and smell like smoke to be fair.
There will be a lot of water in that motad if it's not been having good runs to dry it out inside, the condensation will smell of smoke, after all it has exhaust gasses in it.

The back end of the factory manual is a bit of an after thought and a little messy with updates etc.
Z1000J and Z1000R is a section heading.
The two tables (identified by the smaller font) are Z1000J for the first and yours is the second table as you said.

Thanks again Al, I figured the table out... After reading it properly.
Biggest challenge at the minute seems to be getting replacement valve needles and needle valves.

That makes sense Kev. It hasn't been run in years so perhaps there is a lot of moisture in carbon build up in the exhaust.
Re: Carbs
I'm quite new to this lark but the needles wouldn't cause the original issue of a very high idle, the smoke is an unknown at the moment. I'd get the the carbs / idle problem sorted first, keeping a check on the oil level, get it up to temp and see if the 'smoke' clears.

Re: Carbs
Whip the tail pipe off so just the headers are there. Fire it up and see if there is any difference.
