I guess it depends on your perspective. However, I have stumbled across another option which may work out quite a bit cheaper. But we will see.

Ospipes gentleman said £850 or thereabouts for a set.
So still significantly cheaper than the £1400 proposal, even with a theoretical 15% discount.

Haven't heard from anyone who has fitted an Ospipes set.

While we're on the subject:

What is the general consensus on putting 4 into 4 Z900 sets on Z1000 A1?
Initially I thought that would be wrong / verboten but I've seen a few doing it & doesn't look that odd IMO.
Was there any crossover in '76 with early Z1000s getting the 4-4 sets? Perhaps in the States?

Also Harris chemical black pipes look good.
Had a harris chrome before. Like them just fine but rust badly.

Think many people have done it and in light of the options it’s not a bad idea.. I find it slightly irksome that this batch of 4:2 is more expensive than the more complicated 4:4 and I think I might be shouted down for stating the 4:4 is to busy and I love the business like look of the 4:2 ... I also like the look of the MK2 pipes

I've got a set of OS pipes on my 650. They are full stainless system and have been on there about 8 years. They polish up really well, only discolouring on the downpipes.

That's about supply and demand and numbers produced...there are lots of restorations of Z1 - Z900s going on, or have been, the thou's have only recently, if at all, come into the restoration field, so the Japanese factories haven't mass produced any yet.

So to compare the cost per item from a small batch from a small manufacturer with a mass produced product from a mass producer in Japan supplying worldwide isn't really comparing apples with apples.

But you knew that.

I applaud Nigel for making the effort.

I spoke with OS Pipes a while ago and they no longer had the jigs to made the systems. If anyone wants a set you have to leave your z1000 with them for at least a few weeks for them to make the jig up. The price they quoted me was £850.
I did note that from some photos of the ones they'd made earlier they were less accurate a copy than the ones I have suggested fro London Exhausts.
It's my belief that people are looking for a system that is as close as possible to the the originals.
Obviously, no one is being forced to participate in this group buy and I'm not looking to make any money from it.
As I stated earlier, I have engaged with an alternate European company who have a system which is cheaper. I am looking to get hold of a sample set for review.

Yes like the 4:2 pipes too.
Funny the whole business of Z1 / Z900s as opposed to Z1000s.
My Z1000 is black paint, unrestored, Harris pipe, Gino Ginelli seat. i.e. Old school 70s style.
So a tribute to the bikers I remember when I was a kid in the 70s.

But actually the standard US & UK Z1000 A1/2 is a lovely bike - Easily on a par IMHO with Z1B z900.
So more of a realistic riding proposition - Half the price give or take.

So I'm gearing up to restore mine to green UK standard I think.

Also I live in London and with the new ULEZ restrictions my normal ride '85 BMW K100RS is banned in April.
So the Z is getting some money thrown at it and will once more terrorize zone 1 & 2, since 40 plus years old is MOT, tax, ULEZ exempt!

(My other bike is a '78 Ducati Darmah red/white but not sure my wallet could take that being reversed into by UBER driver)

The pipes are very quiet, but I can't remember how loud originals were for a Z650 !

The bike is completely standard inc carbs and jetting. One thing, the balance pipe is a bit awkward to fit and sits right under the oill filter so you have to split the pipe and swing the pipework to get the filter out. Not sure if the same arrangement for the Z1000. This was the first system they made for a Z650 and copied an old original system. This bike is featured on their website with the system just fitted.

OK thanks for the info. Presume peformance hasn't been restricted as you didn't mention it.
Think I might give them a try. Means carting the bike up to them, but that's OK.

in Germany the 4 in 4 pipes were mounted on the Z1000 S (a modified Z1R) to give the bike more power instead of the 4 in 1 that was originally mounted on the Z1R. It can be done without any problem. You only have to make a bracket at the rear where the pipes can be bolted on.

Please do not think I am being critical of you in any way, i very grateful for your efforts and am reliant on you to source something...I just see “scene” tax everywhere and I can’t help thinking there might be someone out there who would knock up some replicas for under a grand

As has been already pointed out there's two things about pricing. The volume produced and what the market can stand/expects.
The Doremi 4/4 kits are better value as you're getting more for less. But this is a mass produced product which sells in reasonable numbers worldwide.
All the peeps producing the 4/2 are small specialist companies making them by hand - this simply is not a cheap as mass production.
Are they priced based on what they think the markeyt can stand? Who knows..

Any system will need to be of a decent quality. There is an Indian company who can make some 4/2s for us and they would be cheap. But the quality is crap...
