Can someone please advise which is the best jointing compound for casing gaskets. I'm replacing the gasket behind the inner cover behind the ignition pick up/ advance unit.

Gasket stuff.
I use SUZUKI unibond stuff but its expensive. (but cheaper than the kawa equivalent)
On the cover that you are replacing I probably would not use anything as their is no hot oil behind that cover the gasket itself should be enougth to make it watertight.

I've got a new gasket,
KwackerZ1, Can't understand your comment. There must be oil behind the inner right hand cover. The manual says if you incorrectly fit the gasket it can result in an oil leak, any way I've got an oil leak. Thats why I'm taking it apart.
Doesn't say anything about gasket goo for this gasket though, hense my question.

What I meant was its not like the clutch or sump where its generally bathed in the stuff.
I have never known one leak from the area your talking about and have changed several and always put that gasket on dry, so I would check the faces for damage before re-installing.
If in doubt use Suzuki or kawabond with a very thin smearing, dont be tempted by blue hylomar or acres of red hermetite. (it just squidges out and contaiminates the oil pump mesh)
My advice would be invest in some suzuki bond one tube will last you years anyway.

Lets hope its just a damaged gasket or maybe its not been fitted properly. Had the experience you describe with red hermetite, Blue hylomar is not too bad, but it was at least 20 years ago when I was using that. I thought there must be something better.
I take your point and will try some of the Suzuki bond if I need it.
Just looke at gasket and it looks like it's the type that just needs a smear of grease or oil so will assemble witthout goo at first.
