Hi Ross
Removing the lock is a function of inserting the key in the lock, with the cover removed. I just did the same job on my Z650. Problem comes when you don't have the key - I suspect you are up a smelly river with no propulsion device!
As you say, time to get the drill out!!!
Good Luck!

cheers for the replies, as i cant see the number on it, i guess its time to get the drill out , and start looking for a stg lock to fit a 836 key. cheers

Bit " off the wall " here but if you carefull with the drill you wont damage it and whos to know it it will open with any key, the steering lock is only designed to deter the casual "push away " artist i wouldnt be relying on it to secure the bike anyway

There's an article in this month's Practical Superbikes about modifying locks to take a different key. I have had to buy all new locks for my Z900 and the tank lock is different to the rest of the locks. I will be having a go at re-educating the tank lock, it doesn't look too difficult. Might be easier than trying to track down an 836 lock.

must admit, was going to give it till my frame was painted and if i didnt have a 836 lock by then, will get any number lock and file the tumblers to fit...was just trying to deter casual thieves. .cheers for the replies
