I have decided not to condemn the head yet. Steve at Debbens says it is unusual to find a head that is unsalvageable.

I reckon £250 - £300 for bits - plus seat and guide fitting and labour.

Does this sound about right? It adds up to a lot of dosh but then what is the chance of me getting a good head with cam caps that fits for the price?

I am curious as to the sizes of the main jet and pilot jet that was fitted in your carb, and the sizes you replaced them with.

also are you using pod filters, or standard airbox.

and exhaust, 4/4 or 4/1

I ask this as I too have had a sooting problem, I bought genuine carb parts from the US, not Keyster or other poor copies.

I found my carb had a 115 main, 17.5 pilot, and the needle on 4th clip (from bottom), this is on a 4/1 exhaust, standard airbox and K&N filter. I have now set it up with 113 main, 17 pilot and needle on 3rd clip. I shall see how it performs at the weekend when I go to Popham.

Here is my Exhaust system (left hand exit)

My kits also came with a 20 pilot jet. but I went with the 17 as the modern fuel is richer, than the fuel recomended back in the seventies.
I see that the standard for the Z1 series was 112 main, 20 pilot, and needle in 3rd position.
