Coils and plug timing

#1 PostAuthor: Muddychris » Wed Oct 31, 2007 3:43 pm

If someone could confirm what i have done as right or wrong i would be greatfull.

From sitting on the bike position.

Left hand coil fed by a red and a black wire firing number 1 and number 4 piston

Right hand coil fed by a green and a black wire firing number 2 and number 3 piston.

Having trouble getting the old girl started after the rebuild

Cheers

Chris

What bike / Ignition ?

Usual Kawa colours are yellow or (red and yellow) or just red for the feed from the kill switch. Green for 2&3 coil and black for 1&4 coil to points / ecu etc

Muddy, won't hurt if you swap 1+4 with 2+3, to try it out, if you can't be bothered to trace/check wires

I've swapped 1 and 2 for 3 and 4. 2 and 3 for 1 and 2. Ive swapped the coil wires red and black with the other side which would be green and black. I've also swapped over the positions of the feed wires on the coils from top to bottom. green on top with black on the bottom fitting on the coil. and i get nothing. I have checked that they are sparking and fuel is getting through

Would the exhaust make a difference? i've only tightened the collars up finger tight. I was told it's best to let them blow and the slowly tighten until they stop blowing. But would doing this lose me compression?

Cheers

coils etc

Chris,
Ignore my last pm as I have just read the thread updates.

In my kwacker manual the z1000-j3/r2/r1 wiring diagram gives the colours as red and black on one coil and red and green on the other which makes the common colour to both coils the red.

The colours from pickup coil to igniter box are red blue yellow and black

From the igniter to the coils
red common feed to both coils
black to one coil
green to another
black and yellow to earth.

Are they sparking at the right time ? Before TDC?

Also if you have had the cams out has it been retimed correctly as if you have fuel and a spark, its got to be timing.

As I said in the pm if you want to bell me feel free.
Cheers
Phil

Do you have a spark at all four plugs?

I am sceptical about the black wire " Right hand coil fed by a green and a black wire firing number 2 and number 3 piston" have you inadvertantly hooked it to an earth.

trace the red wire into the loom and it should go directly to the start/stop switch from the loom it should feed into the ic ignitor block and feed both coils.
I think you have hooked the coils up wrong trace the black wires to see where they go.

Have you had the adv.ret mechanism to bits?

Would the exhaust make a difference? i've only tightened the collars up finger tight. I was told it's best to let them blow and the slowly tighten until they stop blowing. But would doing this lose me compression? NO

It's running.

Big thanks to all who offered help and advice both onlist and off.

Once i had figured out which coil was supposed to be firing which piston it was a doddle, though i did have to change the wiring over on the coils. Red and black to the right coil and green and black to the right coil

Once again Thank

Cheers
