Feeling a dunce at the moment, about to put the barrel on and with oversize pistons fitted they haven't got the arrow. Didn't take a photo on disassembly and I'm second guessing myself now.
The smaller recess to the front as below is correct ....... isnt it

The smaller recess at the front corresponds with the smaller exhaust valve.
