flickering oil light

#1 PostAuthor: ddg900 » Sun Nov 15, 2015 5:57 pm

Took the A4 out for a ride a couple of weeks ago. Went really well, but on return to home I saw the oil light flicker on a couple of times, but only at low revs (below 2000rpm). Anything over that, no flickering. Fitted a replacement (genuine) oil pressure switch, took it out today - same thing. Only happens once I've done 5-10 miles and engine is up to temp. No visible leaks, no smoke from exhausts.

Oil and filter change was done last month, using OEM filter and Rock Oil Gamma 10W40 mineral oil.

So, next step - sump off, or "do they all do that" ?

any advice appreciated! thanks

Not an uncommon thing!

Well worth an hours work taking off the sump & checking oil pump strainer - for peace of mind.

Modern oils do run "thinner" and at low revs when hot need less gap to flow - so a flickering light that goes off with a few more revs is not always a BAD sign.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Bl**dy hell - I hope mine doesn't look like that!

The new oil pressure switch does have the little hole in it, as did the one that was replaced. Sight glass checked, and oil level looks ok. Checked the workshop manual and made sure I put the recommended amount in, especially as I changed the filter at the same time.

Think it might be a good idea to whip that sump off and have a ganders, just to be sure.

I had a similar thing on my Z1B flickering light at low revs., the filter was clear, changed the switch and was still happening. Dropped the sump and took the pump out. It turned out to be the Philips screws in the pump body had shook loose and one was sticking out slightly and was preventing the pump from turning properly. Worth a look if all else fails

This was the sump plate from what was actually a very good bottom end.

thanks for all the info, guys - I'm currently reading-up and preparing a parts list for a sump off, oil pump screen clear and poss oil pump out for inspection job. Spent too long waiting for this bike to come along to let it self-destruct for want of a bit of extra TLC. :)

When the sump is off you would do well to replace any o rings between sump and engine cases - as well as the gasket.
I think on a 900 A4 there is a 91mm o ring part code 92055-052 that goes in there.

I had the same flickering oil light following the rebuild of my engine when on tick over but if you revved it, it went out. turned out to be the 91mm 'o'' ring in the sump pan or lack of

Put it back in and hey presto no light.
