New Project Help Needed

Hi all - did a little deal today and ended up with a 1978 Z1000 in bits. I first saw the bike complete about 12 years ago and it was a mess then - It's now in my garage in bits and will probably be my next build. Before I get stuck in I could do with some pointers.

First things first - what is the correct model name is it a Z1000 A2 ?
Frame number is KZT00A-026***
Engine number is KZ00AE41***
How do I check these out as they are not matching, has it had a transplant?

Secondly - the frame is going to need shot blasting - repair and powder coating as it has some real corrosion issues especially these pillion lugs

Has anyone had any experience of repairing / fabricating these? Do they get cut off when frames are de lugged - Has anyone got any?

Any help and suggestions gratefully received.

Hi they do rot if your modding cut them off.I used RGV250 rear foot rests

Thats a good looking bike, my current plan is to keep it as standard as is practical without being too anal about it. Just be good to bring it back from the dead.

That's fantastic - how much would you want for them? - I'm happy to pay carriage as well it would save me a load of faffing around.

Thanks Mick - I will check the z power site out - I'm a bit green with Kawasaki part referencing and supply - daft question if it's a Z1000a1 does that make it more interesting?

Checking over the Z power site it does seem to be a Z1000a1 I have some pics of it when it was complete, the yellow was the previous incarnation it now has the maroon bodywork, just need to check out the original factory colour specification.

Thats nothing like the colour of the tank and panels that I have. I thought that they had been sprayed that just confirms it. Had another look tonight it's got a round master cylinder as well so it's looking more likely to be an A1. Looking forward to this. Quick question are the engine cases painted or just alloy finished?

Is there a way to find the bikes original colour from the frame number? The bike's been sprayed before and the new colour documented on the V5 so the original colour is not stated - I'm thinking of getting the bodywork sorted early - it gives me a bit of a psychological boost in the whole rebuild, makes me think i'm a lot further on than I am. Might even try DVLA.

You could try the DVLA but would depend if it's a original UK bike and not an import (KZ).

UK A1's only came in two colours. Diamond wine red and Diamond sky blue.

Excellent - well between DVLA, Kawasaki and the previous owner (the one that had it sprayed) it appears that it's originally a UK bike, not an import, and it was the Kawasaki Diamond Blue, which I have to say was my favourite. Is there a paint mix code for this or is it just a case of matching? Sorry for all the questions. Getting a bit of a horn on about it now.

Paint would need to be 'matched'. I'm sure someone on here could point you in the direction of a decent painter close to you.

Worth noting that if you're planning to go back to standard that 'UK' bikes differ in several ways from the A typical yank import. Brit bikes came with long rear mudguards, grabrail mounted indicators, metal plug caps, twin disc as standard and several other minor differances from it's US cousin.

Also worth noting that standard A1/2 exhausts are made of unobtanium.

Thanks Garry - I have a really good spray guy who has his own mixing plant - he did a great job on my XS850 and is more than happy to use my bike bits as 'fill ins' between bigger jobs. I'm not going to go 'obsessive' on it just period - I think.
