Re: Kz900 seat stand
you have 2 z1000 hinges, you need an a4/5 hinge with stop built in

Ahaaaa ! There we are then.
I knew there was something amiss.
Thanks Taffus.
I better see if I can get my hands on a couple of the right ones.
Don’t suppose anyone has a couple they want to part with for some beer tokens, before I check out good old eBay ! ?
Cheers

Re: Kz900 seat stand
Thanks Taffus, so just one I’m after then.
There are some on eBay but most seem to be in the US.
If nobody on here has any to sell i’ll Get one on order in a day or two.
Anyways, thanks for your help in sorting this out for me. I see exactly how it works now.
Cheers

Re: Kz900 seat stand
I ended getting mine from the US. It's a naff design really
Re: Kz900 seat stand
Yeh it does seem a bit of a pants design doesn’t it.
I was even wondering if it might be possible to weld a homemade stop onto my existing hinge(s)

Re: Kz900 seat stand
My A4 has nothing on the frame to engage with that tag so the seat does just rest on the side panel. I think the stop is there as mentioned earlier to stop one of the pins coming out with the seat closed. Mine is exactly the same as the seat in the photo above, the 'stop' is just an extra piece held on by the hinge bolt. I'd always thought it odd that there's only 1, but it would be easy enough to make another.

The stop hits the bottom of the frame hinge, mine was fitted to the rear hinge and the seat hit the side panel, when I moved it to the front it no longer hits the side panel.
Walshyco has added a tie wrap to his rear hinge which shimmed the fit better, I was considering something similar but my OCD kicked in hence I tried fitting it to the front.
I mentioned earlier that there are 2 part numbers for the a4 seat hinges and they are both called "Hinge, Rear" so one of them must fit the front hinge.
Re: Kz900 seat stand
OK, I had a better look and you're right. One seat hinge has a piece curled to fit around & under the frame hinge, so it should stop the seat from going further. The part number in my A4 parts list is slightly different than the ebay part linked above.
According to my list, the part is 53009-037 (Front Hinge), picture attached. A cable tie, as mentioned above, around the frame hinge would help buffer the metal-metal and add a bit of distance, good tip.

Ah another z mystery solved! I have been using the American Kawasaki site and Zedder's database for parts. It looks like they both have the same source data about "rear hinges"
So in conclusion, the hinge with the stopper built in is the front hinge hence why it now stops the seat hitting the side panel on my bike!
Re: Kz900 seat stand
Happy days. Glad we got to the bottom of it (no intended pun) in the end.
My efforts to find one haven’t yet been successful other than from the USA on eBay, but then I’d pay Tax and the post office a fee of £12 for collecting the tax, I.e. a hinge would end up costing me about 50 quid
I do have 2 spare brand new plain hinges without the stop on them, so maybe I’ll see if I can get someone to weld a stop onto one of them for me. Gotta be worth a try ?

Re: Kz900 seat stand
I think the stop should be easy enough to make from a piece of plain steel bolted through the same holes as the hinge itself. I'll try to make some photos later today. The ebay example does not look the same part to me, but that's maybe the picture.
Re: Kz900 seat stand
Thank you sir
Re: Kz900 seat stand
A couple of pix, I needed to take the hinges off for a bit of paint so a timely opportunity.
